Wando sophomore Jake Liebert wins the Class AAAAA cross country boys individual state championship at the Sandhills Research Center in Columbia on Nov. 12.
Liebert, who won the Region 7-AAAAA title and Class AAAAA state qualifier this season, posted a time of 15:42 to lead Wando to a sixth-place finish in the team standings. Ashley Ridge finished 16th in the team standings.
“I had a great season really, but this is the only meet that really means anything in the grand scheme of things,” said Liebert, who finished 18th at last year’s state meet. “This was the first year I really trained hard and changed my diet. I put in the work to achieve this goal today. It feels great.”
Liebert said he felt confident going into the state meet.
“I knew I could run up front and be in contention,” he said. “I felt awesome throughout the race. The hill was a little tough but once I got past that, I felt I could finish strong.”
