School closing Information, Resources and Links - Updated weekly

All schools in South Carolina are closed for the remainder of this school year per Governor McMaster.

Please contact us with questions about anything you don't find here.

CANCELLATION:  At this time we recognize that everyone is confronted with challenges and demands that are quite consuming! The Charleston Reading Council leadership has decided to suspend the Growing Young Writers and Read to Marley Contests for this year. We appreciate the interest that many of you have shown in the events, and encourage you to continue to explore your creativity in writing and digital literacy! Please continue to be diligent in your social distancing and your health care, and know that we look forward to reconnecting with you once this pandemic is over.

Several companies are offering free or reduced price access to the internet for students during the school shutdown.

Comcast – use this link:

  • Be an eligible “qualified low-income household”
  • Go to or call 855-846-8376 for English or call 855-765-6995 for Spanish
  • All new customers will receive a free self-install kit with no shipping fee

Spectrum – call this number:  1-844-488-8398.  You will get a recording.  When prompted, say “new service” and give your zip code when asked.  You will be directed to a customer service rep.  They are also offering 40% off prices for mobile service during this time and they use Verizon towers. Also:

  • Be a household with a student enrolled in a K-12 school or college
  • Installation fees will be waived for eligible households

Hotspot:  Almost every phone, whether it’s an Iphone or Android, has the built in ability to be used as a hotspot.  You will have to add an unlimited data plan to your existing service.  This won’t work well for videos, but should enable students to get to mail, links and their Google Classroom.

Logging in at home:

All students should be able to access resources on their personal or school devices.  Students need to log into Clever and MAKE sure they log into the filter to ensure that they can access what they need.

A good resource for parents to Google Classroom:

Family Supports: Hotline and Google Site

A Family Support Line has been established to provide a resource for students or parents that need additional support during this extended schools closure. This hotline is not to replace school based interventions and supports, our main goal is to assist families in connecting to resources which could be school counselors, parent advocates, DMH services, social workers, etc.
CCSD employees from the Departments of Alternative Programs, Counseling Services, and Intervention & Psychological Services will answer calls Monday – Friday from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm. The Family Support Hotline number is 843-937-7907.
As we continue with distance learning, it is important to share and teach expectations with our students.  The Department of Alternative Programs has developed this site to provide learning matrices for completing work at home as well as SEL activities and resources for families: Family PBIS and SEL Google site
