Charleston County School District (CCSD) is excited to announce and welcome Jermaine Joyner as principal at St. John’s High School. Joyner has served as an assistant principal and director of Wando High School’s Freshman Academy since 2016.
A CCSD graduate from North Charleston High School, Joyner immediately returned to serve in his home school district as a student concern specialist at Morningside Middle School in 2005 after completing his student teaching at R.B. Stall High the previous spring. Shortly after, Joyner became a middle school social studies teacher at Morningside before taking the same position at Brentwood Middle School in 2007.
Through demonstrated skill and an outstanding commitment to his students, Joyner was tapped to serve as lead technology teacher and teacher coach at West Ashley Middle School for two years before joining the administration at Thomas C. Cario Middle School as an assistant principal in 2010.
As an assistant principal at Cario, Joyner oversaw the eighth grade with approximately 450 student and 16 teachers. In 2012, he took the assistant principal position at what was then Sanders-Clyde Elementary Middle School where he oversaw the middle grades, five through eight, for nearly three years. Having excelled in his leadership role as assistant principal, Joyner was appointed as interim principal at Sanders-Clyde for one year helping to cultivate a vision for the school with measurable goals and strategies for implementation during his time there.
In 2016, Joyner joined the staff at Wando High School as an assistant principal and director of the school’s Freshman Academy. In this role, Joyner planned, organized, and directed the activities of a school within a school model with approximately 750 students, three assistant principals, and over 40 certified teachers and support staff. Additionally, he served as lead administrator overseeing school culture and climate, and worked to create and implement systems and practices of providing tiered supports for students both academically and behaviorally as the Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS) and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) lead. He was also directly responsible for the supervision of the PE/Health department, including the development of the vision for the PE/Health program, overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of all activities within the school.
Joyner holds a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education and a Master of Arts in Secondary Administration from The Citadel. He has also participated as a member of the South Carolina State Department of Education’s Assistant Principal Program for Leadership Excellence (APPLE), Developing Aspiring Principals Program (DAPP), and Principal’s Induction Program (PIP).
