2021 Teacher of the Year

Sarah Laskowski was named at St. John's Teacher of Year for 2021. Here is what she had to say about herself and her teacking philosophy.

Laskowski "CCSD's driving mission statement is that students are the heart of our work and I can honestly say that at St. John's, that's a true statement. In my seven years at our school, I have had to do a lot of growing and reflecting, and one thing I can always pinpoint is that our students, their needs and their personalities, have driven my work as a St. John's teacher. I believe that my classes are tailored to each new group of students, and I try to always include the social-emotional learning that is so uniquely integrated into our communication and the voices of our students. I work hard to avoid accepting non-solution answers when faced with struggling students, whether on an individual or a school-wide level, and I try to support the teams and systems that can create solutions. Especially this year, more than any other year, I've been careful to tell my students, explicitly, that their health and overall happiness (because sometimes it's ok to be mad that you have to stay for PowerHour to finish an assignment!) are the most important things. I try to remind that them that I have high expectations because I know they can be successful, and that my main goal is always their individual success. Maybe it’s because I’m lucky to work at St. Johns where it’s the norm, but putting students at the heart of my day is how I learned to teach!"

We are proud to have her represent us!
