CCSD taking site applications for 2024 free summer meals program

Summer Meal Program

RELEASE DATE: April 18, 2024

The summer can be exciting for many children and teenagers, filled with vacations, camps, and relaxation. But for others who rely on daily school meals, it can be a stressful time when you don’t know where your next meal will come from.

Charleston County School District’s (CCSD) Seamless Summer Feeding Program (SSFP) works to fill the nutrition gap when school is out. In 2023, CCSD served more than 237,000 free breakfast and lunch meals at 134 sites.

For seven weeks, CCSD’s Nutrition Services Department will again provide free breakfast and lunch to approved sites in Charleston County through the SSFP.

The program starts Monday, June 17, 2024, and will run through Friday, August 2, 2024 (closed weekends and Thursday, July 4, 2024).

Breakfast and homemade hot lunches are prepared at one of 10 meal preparation sites (CCSD school kitchens/cafeterias). Representatives from approved summer sites, including schools, camps, community and recreation centers, and churches, can pick up their free meals daily from one of these locations.

Any child or teen 18 years old or younger is eligible for a free breakfast and/or lunch. There is no approval process for individual children because the site itself already qualifies to receive the free summer meals. All necessary serving and eating utensils, plates, napkins, and condiments are provided.

Meals are available for pick-up at approved sites throughout Charleston County, including McClellanville, North Charleston, James Island, Johns Island, Hollywood, downtown Charleston, and West Ashley.

Applying to become a site that receives free meals is simple – just click on and complete our 2024 Summer Meals Site Application. To learn more about CCSD’s Seamless Summer Feeding Program, please visit our website.

The deadline for submitting an application is Friday, April 26, 2024.
