Return to School Update and More
This is James Island Charter High School with some very important updates.
JICHS Instructional Model
Last night our Board of Directors approved the following two motions:
Based on the medical metrics for Charleston County, JICHS will transition into a hybrid teaching and learning model to begin no sooner than 20 calendar days from September 21, 2020. The Board will review the medical metrics for Charleston County at regularly scheduled board meetings.
Adopt the proposed Hybrid Schedule/Calendar from the JICHS Leadership Team.
JICHS Hybrid Model
Based on these motions, JICHS will begin operating on a hybrid Orange & Blue Group model starting October 12, 2020. A regular Wednesday (typical five day week) will remain an eLearning day with schedule R2. Please see the color-coded calendar for specific details.
JICHS will follow the same safety protocols as CCSD, including their mask policy. We will conduct daily temperature screenings for everyone that enters our building. These devices take a person’s temperature in less than a second. This will take less time than checking for student IDs and masks. Everyone, staff, and students, are expected to follow the three W’s: Wash your hands, Watch your distance, and Wear a mask.
It was evident last spring when we had senior events and seeing what is happening at high schools and on college campuses across the country that many young people are not taking COVID-19 protocols seriously. The largest rise in COVID cases is amongst these age groups. We realize that many of our students may not choose to socially distance from each other on their own time. We cannot control those decisions, nor is it our place to do so. However, at JICHS, it is the expectation that no one is considered in “close contact” with someone else while at school, staff included. The CDC and DHEC define close contact as within 6 ft for 15 minutes or more with or without a mask. All of the classrooms are set-up to meet social distance requirements. Our common areas (cafeteria and courtyards) are set-up for social distancing with signage and plexiglass in place. Where this may break down is when students are in less structured environments, which is during arrival, dismissal, and lunch. All the safety protocols we have in place are rendered irrelevant if we let students congregate during these times.
As a school, we are making plans to manage these times, but we do need the cooperation of our students if returning to in-person instruction is going to be successful. As much as we want the social aspect of school to return to normal, we are not there yet. We want our students back in school, and we want it to continue. I think we will get there sooner if we all do our part and follow the COVID-19 safety protocols. Parents/Guardians, please reinforce these expectations with your students. We are all in this together.
More information about the transition to the hybrid model will be forthcoming. Another JICHS Townhall Meeting will be scheduled in the very near future to answer questions. (https://www.ccsdschools.com/

Just a reminder, the deadline to apply to serve on our Board of Directors or Discipline Review Committee is September 25, 2020, at 3:00 pm. Please consider serving on one of our boards!
As far as attending JICHS athletic events, I want to reinforce the expectation that students may only attend if they are accompanied by and sitting with their parents or guardians. Students must enter at the same time as their parents or guardians. Students may not sit with other students. Allowing students to sit together completely compromises all the safety precautions we are taking as a school. Patrons are expected to sit in family units because they are already considered “close contacts.” This is an expectation that comes directly from SCHSL. As an added precaution, tickets for our athletic events can only be purchased online.
We are excited to have ALL of our students returning to school soon and to have high school sports back. If we all do our part to keep us and others safe then I think we have a chance to make this work.
Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation.
