Charleston County School District (CCSD) and ABC News Channel 4 have partnered for the 2019-2020 school year to promote bus, crosswalk and pedestrian safety for students on their route to school.
The Trooper Bob Safety Squad is designed to teach students the best safety practices as they travel to and from school each day.
“We want our students to become advocates for safety on their route to school,” said Michael Reidenbach, Director of Security and Emergency Management. “CCSD puts children at the heart of our work, and that means in and out of the classroom. The safety of our students is of the utmost importance, and we use every avenue and resource we can to convey the message of safety and offer safety procedures for every scenario.”
Since Trooper Bob is known for his clever emoji messages and is a recognizable face in the Lowcountry, CCSD developed the partnership to extend messaging reach.
“The Kids look up to Trooper Bob, and with that in mind we wanted to get him in front of the students each week,” said Reidenbach.
Trooper Bob will visit several CCSD elementary schools each week to deliver his Safety Squad Talk and award the school with a Trooper Bob safety Squad Certification of Completion.
“It’s important for drivers to know when to stop for a school bus, but it’s just as important for students to know school bus stop safety,” said Trooper Bob. “I’m excited and looking forward to bringing other safety messages to them in person during the 2019-2020 school calendar year.”
Back to school brings increased traffic, explained Reidenbach.
“Everyone is in a rush, and students are often excited and become distracted. We want to use every opportunity at our disposal to educate, inform, and remind kids how to conduct themselves and what precautionary measures they can take to protect themselves and their classmates.”
Parents are encouraged to get in on the fun and follow Trooper Bob in the morning at ABC News Channel 4 and on social media as well on the district website and CCSD social media pages.
