CCSD sees significant improvement in overall school ratings

SCDE Report Cards The SC Department of Education and the Education Oversight Committee released 2019 School and District Report Cards, state test scores, and End Of Course Results Tuesday, October 1, 2019.

Charleston County School District (CCSD) saw significant improvement in the overall rating of schools. The number of CCSD Excellent-rated schools increased by four from last year; Excellent/Good-rated schools increased by seven from last year; CCSD Average and Above schools increased by nine from last year; and CCSD Unsatisfactory schools dropped from 14 last year to only three this year.

Noteworthy accomplishments from the 2019 report card ratings include:
  • Academic Magnet High School is the highest-rated high school in the State (97 points out of 100).
  • Buist Academy grades 6-8 is the highest-rated middle school in the State (85 points out of 100).
  • Moultrie Middle School is the highest-rated non-magnet middle school in the State (83 points out of 100).
  • All 14 CCSD schools that received Unsatisfactory ratings last year move up at least one rating level on the 2019 report cards.

 

Also, 41-percent of CCSD schools improved their Overall rating and 60-percent of CCSD schools improved their Overall rating points (on a 100-point scale) from last year.

None of the 11 schools that were Rated Unsatisfactory last year are Unsatisfactory this year. All moved up at least one rating level. In addition, more than half of CCSD middle schools have an Excellent or Good rating.

End of Course results

In English, CCSD students improved the percentage making an A, B, or C matching the state’s improvement. CCSD has 7.2-percent more students scoring at the “C” or above level than the state as a whole.

CCSD Students improved by nearly nine-percent in making an A, B, or C in history than the State as a whole.

In addition, the percentage of students scoring A, B, or C on all end-of-course tests is higher than the state.

Graduation Rate and College and Career Readiness

Students outperformed the state on the percentage of students demonstrating college or career, as well as college and career readiness. CCSD students also increased the on-time graduation rate, the percentage of students meeting college readiness, and career readiness levels compared to the previous year.

SC Ready ELA and Math Results

CCSD is above the state in both English and Math by over four percentage points in both subjects.

The overall percentage of all students in grades 3-8 combined scoring Meets or Exceeds improved from last year.

English Language Arts improved in two of three elementary grades and two of three middle grades, based on the percentage of students “meeting or exceeding” standards.

The overall percentage of students in grades 3-8 combined scoring Meets or Exceeds improved from last year. Mathematics improved in all grades tested except 6th-grade, based on the percentage of students Meeting or Exceeding standards.

SC PASS Science and Social Studies

CCSD is above the state in the percentage of students scoring Met or Exemplary in Science and Social Studies.

Grades 5 and 7 took Social Studies. Grades 4, 6, 8 took Science.

This was the final year of PASS Social Studies testing. Scores dropped in the two grades tested (5 and 7) based on the percentage of students scoring Met or Exemplary.

Science scores improved in 4th grade but dropped in 6th and 8th grades based on the percentage of students scoring Meets or Exceeds.
