CCSD recognizes community partners and two stand-out staff leaders

RELEASE DATE: June 27, 2024

Special RecognitionCharleston County School District’s (CCSD) Board of Trustees honored long-time (37 years of service) staff member Sonya Jones, and the Department of Federal Programs during the special recognition portion of the regular board meeting on Monday, June 24, 2024. A scholarship has been created in her honor, called the “Sonya B. Jones McKinney-Vento and Unaccompanied Youth Scholarship.” This scholarship will provide a one-time, $500 payment to a CCSD McKinney-Vento (unhoused) senior attending an accredited higher education institution, a junior or community college, a career college, or an online degree program.

Jones serves as the program coordinator for the McKinney-Vento Program, the Neglected and Delinquent Program, the Foster Care Stability Program, and is the Title I Compliance Coordinator in the Department of Federal Programs. Because of her service and dedication over the years, the Department of Federal Programs and CCSD’s community partners wanted to honor her legacy by establishing the fund.

Molina HealthCare, a community partner who has been instrumental in supporting CCSD’s initiatives for unhoused students and their families, will fund the scholarship.

In addition, the following McKinney-Vento partners were recognized for their support of the district’s efforts to support the unhoused students of CCSD: Jean’s Angels, Lowcountry Food Bank, the Navigation Center, Village to Village Foundation, and WCSC-TV (Live 5 News).
