CCSD’s Division of Human Resources Department celebrates alternative pathway participants

RELEASE DATE: June 4, 2024

Men of CHS TeachLast month, Charleston County School District’s (CCSD) TeachCharleston Program and Men of CHS Teach celebrated the culmination of the academic year with an event to honor those that have become educators through CCSD's very own alternative pathways.

As part of TeachCharleston, the 19 participants honored at the event completed the three-year program, the largest group of completers since the inception of the program in 2018. Over the past six years, TeachCharleston has placed nearly 100 educators in 28 schools and three alternative programs. Over 30 educators are expected to join CCSD via TeachCharleston in the 2024-2025 school year.

CCSD is committed to building a diverse teacher workforce to prepare all students to be global citizens. High-retention alternative teaching pathways have been created to attract diverse teacher candidates.

As a result, Men of CHS Teach was launched in January of 2021 to recruit male teachers of color for teaching positions in early childhood and elementary education which has now expanded to all content areas.

As a part of Men of CHS Teach, the participants were honored for completing their South Carolina Department of Education Praxis exams and their residency year working alongside veteran teachers in CCSD to become a teacher of record next school year. The program allows Men of CHS Teach candidates to earn a teaching certificate in all content areas.

The district’s collaboration with the University of South Carolina for Men of CHS Teach has placed over 30 men of color in CCSD classrooms.
