James Island captures first state title in baseball in nearly three decades

RELEASE DATE: May 23, 2024

James Island Charter High School used a three-run rally in extra innings to sweep the South Carolina High School AAAA state championship series in baseball, beating Laurens 10-7 in eight innings in Game 2. This is the Trojans’ first state title in the sport since 1996.

James Island was down to its final out when Connor Dantzler came through with a two-run, two-out single to tie the game, 7-7, in the top of the seventh inning. Then the Trojans got a solo home run from Stow Rogers in the top of the eighth and a two-run shot from Taj Marchand to extend the lead.

Grayson Bennett was the winning pitcher, coming on in relief in the fifth inning.  The senior right-hander finished the game with 3.1 innings pitched, one hit, and seven strikeouts to close out the victory.

This is the Trojans' third state title in program history.

James Island won Game 1 earlier in the week, 5-4. The Trojans end the season with a 29-3-1 record.
