Students from two CCSD schools take flight in a C-17

CCSD C-17

RELEASE DATE: April 19, 2024

On April 19, 2024, students from Charleston Charter School of Math and Science and North Charleston High School took to the friendly skies as they boarded a C-17 at Joint Base Charleston. The experience was made possible through Aviation Inspiration and Mentorship (AIM) funds and the "Accelerating the Legacy" team (a group of military members dedicated to outreach and the promotion of recruitment in the underserved student population and educate and showcase the different opportunities that the military, aviation, and STEM careers can provide). It supports community engagement with a mission to inform, influence, and inspire the next generation of Air Force aviators.

Students and staff from the two schools began the day by speaking with Air Force pilots, then boarded a C-17 for an hour-long flight. While in the air, they experienced a drop of supplies over a pre-selected location and saw the pilots in action in the cockpit.

After the flight, the students walked around the base to take in the sights, sounds, and experiences of the Charleston Airshow STEM Day.

Charleston County School District thanks Joint Base Charleston, the U.S. Air Force, and the "Accelerating the Legacy" team for our students' eye-opening and potentially life-changing opportunity.
