The West Ashley Center For Advanced Studies hosts Wellness Fair
The West Ashley Center for Advanced Studies (WACAS) hosted its second annual Wellness Fair on Tuesday, December 12, 2023. The WACAS Wellness Committee organized an engaging and informational event that brought a multitude of community members and resources together. Professionals were on hand to provide mental and physical health information, resources, and activities to its students from West Ashley High School, Baptist Hill Middle High School, and St. Johns High School.
This all-day event allowed students to receive information and products, and to talk to community vendors about topics such as medication safety, drug and alcohol use and abuse, gun violence, domestic violence, mental health, women’s health, healthy eating habits, stress, blood pressure, and more. The Charleston Police Department and WACAS SROs conducted impaired driving simulations and sobriety tests, the National Guard had an obstacle course, the EMS provided CPR training, and local fire department trucks and the MUSC Pediatric helicopter were on site.
The WACAS also hosted multiple food trucks and vendors available for students to visit throughout the day.
“Our goal is to provide education and awareness and to introduce many different topics of health and wellness to our students,” said this year’s event organizer, WACAS Nurse Charlene Barbot. “We wanted to provide a very holistic picture of emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual health and safety and we wanted it to be fun as well.
