Law enforcement officers protect and serve our communities twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year. The need for support for our law enforcement cannot be understated. In a time where police ambushes are happening at an all-time high while media coverage focuses heavily on the negatives of law enforcement and very little on the positives of police work. It is our desire to encourage a positive view of this noble profession and to garner statewide support for those who are committed to running towards the dangers of society without question or hesitation.

Thursday, January 9th, 2020, is Law Enforcement Appreciation Day (LEAD).  This is a great chance to start the New Year off with a show of support for federal, state and local law enforcement officers. Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.), created LEAD in response to perceived negativity toward law enforcement.  Support for LEAD (which was first observed in 2015) provides an opportunity to communicate directly with law enforcement apart from Police Week, which occurs in May and focuses on honoring those who have died in the line of duty.

We thought this was a great opportunity to engage South Carolina schools in supporting their federal, state and local law enforcement.  Some ideas on ways to support law enforcement could include:

·         Encourage staff and students to wear blue on January 9 and to learn about ways they can personally show support for law enforcement.

·         Share a story about a positive law enforcement experience or your SRO on social media.

·         Suggest students write letters and/or draw pictures supporting for law enforcement.

·         Organize an event in support of local law enforcement (i.e. conduct an assembly and invite your local law enforcement officers to attend to show support.)

·         Change exterior light bulbs to blue bulbs.
