The Pulse of CCSD

Jennifer Holmes - W.B. Goodwin Elementary
Charleston native Jennifer Parker Holmes only ever thought about becoming a teacher or a nurse as a young girl. She is living out both dreams at W.B. Goodwin Elementary School as everyone’s favorite nurse.
Stephanie Nettis - Accounting Manager
If Stephanie Nettis wins the Powerball she’s really going to miss her work family in the Charleston County School District (CCSD) Accounting Department. Until then, she will continue to praise them and remain forever grateful for all of their hard work. Nettis is the Director of Accounting and has been with CCSD for 15 years. She loves her work and especially loves her team of colleagues.
Pulse of CCSD - Vince Fredericks
Vincent Fredericks spent most of his adult life serving in law enforcement in the state of New York. It was a career choice that he hoped would carry him through to retirement.
Pulse of CCSD - Eric Stallings
Getting an education was important in Eric Stallings’ household. So much so that he knew early on in life that he wanted to be a teacher. Many years later, Stallings, Charleston County School District’s (CCSD) Assistant Director of Pathways to Teaching, fulfilled that dream.
Pulse of CCSD - Dana Gepford
Retirement only lasted a year for veteran educator Dana Gepford who started her career with CCSD at Midland Park Elementary School, where she spent 21 years. Gepford rounded out her career at Mamie Whitesides after an additional 13 years.
Laura Shaw - Charleston Progressive Academy
Ms. Shaw is a Navy Veteran who has a passion for teaching. She is Charleston Progressive Academy's 2023 Teacher of the Year and was instrumental in CPA becoming a Leader in Me School.
Jerome Hagood - W.B. Goodwin Elementary
At W. B. Goodwin Elementary School, one of the real superstars is a man that is self-motivated, resilient in the face of adversity, and someone who takes ownership of his work. The school’s beloved day porter, Jerome Hagood, leaves everyone with a smile.
Phillip Kaston - Wando High School
Phillip Caston is Wando High School’s Award-winning yearbook advisor. Year after year, his Legendary yearbook students bring home top awards for the yearbook called Legend.
Rachael Washington - Northwoods Middle School
Washington is a source of constant energy for the faculty at Northwoods Middle School. She exudes a commitment to the nighthawks that sets a tone for others. She provides supports in a variety of ways for students and faculty and keeps everyone aligned with Positive Behavior Intervention Supports philosophies.
Christina Vivas - ESOL
Vivas walks beside English Language Learners as they grow and integrate into Charleston Community
Kurt Huffman - Environmental Manager
Little did Kurt Huffman know that his experience working on the farm would serve him well in his career. Huffman started his career with CCSD in a grounds leadership position and is now an environmental manager where he monitors and addresses indoor air quality, asbestos, lead, in-ground storage tanks, and mold remediation.
Carla Ferrette-Clark - CTE Instructor Military Magnet
It wasn’t until Carla Ferrette-Clark turned 21 years old that she realized there was more to life than the one that she was living. She was a high school dropout, a mother of three children before deciding to change her life.
Michael Bryson - Help Desk Administrator
When a Charleston County School District (CCSD) teacher calls the Office of Information and Technology (IT) they do not want to be dazzled with a lot of technological jargon. They just want the IT department to fix their device or solve their issue.
Sarah Novack - Jennie Moore Elementary School
Sarah Novack fell in love with the family feel that Jennie Moore Elementary School offered. Because of that, she has worn many different hats at Jennie Moore over the last 19 years.
Sharon Armstrong - Transportation
The humble are often called to serve in unanticipated ways. In the case of Sharon Armstrong, she served her country with honor as an eight-year Army Reservist and marched down a civilian career path that allowed her to serve others in the areas of transportation and education. Today she is a 15-year veteran of Charleston County School District, currently working as a Routing Technician in the Office of Transportation.
Robert Waltz
Robbie Waltz feels incredibly blessed to be able to provide for the students of Charleston County school district. He is an Environmental Officer in the Office of Facilities Management.
Lucia Boinest - Culinary Arts (NCHS)
Lucia Boinest grew up in a household where it was understood that upon high school graduation, you were going to college. It was off to Sewanee – the University of the South where she enrolled as a Third World Studies major with a concentration in Russian so she could go into Foreign Service. Boinest’s next stop was University of South Carolina Law School. But that lasted for just one day.
Rozita Wylder
For Rozita Wylder, the road to becoming an educator was a winding one. Wylder taught at Garrett Academy for 24 years and spent a total of 26 years there. This year, Wylder chose to move to Military Magnet Academy because of the smaller student body and its the school where she felt the strongest pull. Wylder also seeks to ignite within her students the desire to be the change they want to see.
Dennis Burgess - Facilities
Overseeing nine million square feet of building space (the equivalent of 4500 homes sized at 2,000 square feet) was not what Dennis Burgess envisioned when he pondered a second career. But today, 18 years later, Burgess is a Plant Operations Officer for Charleston County School District (CCSD).
Ricardo Robinson
Deer Park MS Assistant Principal Ricardo Robinson's career choice was driven by the notion that young black boys that would come after him, would be motivated and inspired by other black men such as himself.
Rodney Simmons - Information Technology
The District's latest Pulse of CCSD recognizes Charleston native Rodney Simmons who was drawn to the field of information technology because of the ever-evolving nature. What he didn’t anticipate was how the day to day operations would change in his position as Field Support Supervisor with CCSD.
Seth Summers - Kaleidoscope
Seth Summers is Kaleidoscope Site Coordinator at Goodwin Elementary School. Summers’ willingness to serve is evident in all he does, especially in his decision to serve as site coordinator during a temporary Kaleidoscope program for the children of local healthcare workers
Girmania Matrille
Having a trusting person, who speaks your language can quell fears of the unknown. Girmania Matrille tries to be that person for the Hunley Park Elementary community. She knows first-hand how difficult it is to learn a second language since she primarily taught herself to speak English.
Joyce Baldwin
Joyce Baldwin is a well known community member east of the Cooper and has mentored countless numbers of children and families. Her role at Wando High School is one in which students and families respect and admire her.
Jessica Bryant
Jessica Bryant, an associate reading teacher at Haut Gap Middle School, takes great pride in being a teacher. She put in the hard work to become an educator and wasn’t going to let a horrific, freak accident prevent her from living out her passion.

What is the Pulse of CCSD

CCSD employees, directly and indirectly, influence our scholars every day with little to no intention of being recognized. In an effort to honor even the most humble, the district is rolling out a recognition campaign to highlight these individuals that serve as the backbone or structure that supports the mission of CCSD.

The communications office will partner with administrators throughout the district to spotlight employees who deserve to be honored.

Who is eligible to be recognized as the Pulse of CCSD

Any employee or contractor that embodies the vision/mission of Charleston County School District by consistently demonstrating extraordinary and selfless acts of leadership, empathy, and kindness to advance the educational opportunities for all students. This recognition would be awarded to the individual who not only exemplifies their school community but their colleagues and the district as a whole.
