Trevor Macy, a physical education teacher at R.B. Stall High School, made history for his school and the Charleston County School District (CCSD). He was recently named the 2026 High School Teacher of the Year by the South  Carolina Association for Physical Education and Sport (SCAPES), becoming the first CCSD PE  teacher ever to receive this award.

Macy will be honored at the 99th Annual South Carolina Alliance for Health, Physical Education,  Recreation and Dance (SCAHPERD) Conference in Myrtle Beach in November.

The statewide award recognizes physical education teachers who demonstrate excellence in the classroom, serve as positive role models, use innovative teaching strategies to meet individual student needs, provide a balanced and sequential curriculum, and demonstrate a commitment to professional growth.

“This is such an honor and an achievement that is a culmination of eight years of being uncomfortable, learning from others, failing and succeeding in the classroom, and ultimately creating a program at Stall that myself and the rest of my team in the department are extremely proud of,” Macy said.

Macy is in his eighth year of teaching and his fifth year at R.B. Stall. He began his career in  Oregon, where he was raised, after earning a bachelor's degree in Exercise and Sports  Science, with a focus in Fitness and Nutrition, from Oregon State University in 2016. He earned a master's degree in Teaching, with an endorsement in Health and Physical Education, from  Southern Oregon University in 2019.

After spending two years teaching at a rural high school in Oregon, Macy and his family moved to Mount Pleasant in 2021 and joined the R.B. Stall faculty in 2022. At the start of the 2024-2025 school year, Principal Steve Larson appointed Macy as the school's Physical Education/Health Department Chair.

Macy’s passion for physical education stems from helping students learn to care for their bodies and develop an appreciation for physical activity that extends beyond the classroom.

“I truly enjoy working at R.B. Stall High School because it gives me the opportunity to work with so many students from so many different walks of life and from so many different cultures,”  Macy said. “I love the conversations I have and the relationships I have built with the students I  have served, and the staff I get to work with each day.”

Macy added that he hopes the recognition also brings positive attention to the R.B. Stall community and the educators and students who have contributed to his success.

To be eligible for the SCAPES Teacher of the Year award, nominees must have at least five years of physical education teaching experience at their respective level and demonstrate exemplary teaching, positive leadership, innovative instruction, a balanced curriculum, and ongoing professional growth. Nominees must also be current members of SCAPES and SHAPE  America, or agree to become members if selected.
