Nancy Johnson

CCSD has named Nancy Johnson as its new Director of Safety and Risk Services. Johnson brings more than 25 years of experience in risk management, insurance administration, workplace safety, and operational leadership across local government, state government, and the private sector. She most recently served as Director of Risk Management & Safety for Dorchester County, where she led countywide safety initiatives, managed insurance and workers' compensation programs, oversaw OSHA compliance, and implemented strategies to reduce organizational risk.

In her new role, Johnson will lead CCSD's Safety and Risk Services Department, overseeing the district's risk management, insurance, workplace safety, and loss prevention programs. She will work closely with district leaders to strengthen safety practices, protect district resources, and support a safe environment for students, employees, and visitors.

"Nancy's experience leading complex safety and risk management programs, combined with her collaborative approach to problem-solving, makes her an outstanding addition to our leadership team," said Chief Financial Officer Daniel Prentice. "Creating safe learning and working environments is foundational to student success, and Nancy's expertise will help us continue strengthening our systems and supporting our schools."

Prior to her work with Dorchester County, Johnson held leadership positions with Duke Energy, the South Carolina Department of Insurance, and Santee Cooper, where she specialized in insurance programs, claims management, compliance, contract risk analysis, and process improvement. Throughout her career, she has focused on using data and strategic planning to improve operational efficiency while reducing organizational risk. Her leadership has earned numerous professional recognitions, including the South Carolina Association of Counties' Outstanding Safety Achievement Award, which recognizes county staff for excellence in risk management and workplace safety. Additionally, through implementing creative and strategic risk financing initiatives, she has saved public organizations where she has served millions of dollars per year in expenses.

Johnson holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Carolina and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics/Computer Science from South Carolina State University.

"We are excited to welcome Nancy to Charleston County School District," Huggins said. "Her depth of experience and commitment to continuous improvement will strengthen our ability to serve our students, employees, and community."
