Matilda F. Dunston Primary School has been awarded a $4,000 Play 60 grant from the Carolina Panthers through the NFL Hometown Huddle Program. The grant will be used to purchase kinesthetic equipment for classrooms and supplies for an active recess.

To celebrate NFL Hometown Huddle, the Carolina Panthers award PLAY 60 grants to local schools or youth service organizations across North Carolina and South Carolina. The grants support youth health and wellness programming. Grant funds can be used for playground or gymnasium refurbishment or, to purchase physical education or athletic equipment, for example.

Designed to tackle childhood obesity through 60 minutes of daily physical activity, NFL PLAY 60 brings together the NFL’s long-standing commitment to health and fitness with partner organizations like United Way.

“We are happy to be able to support your efforts and thank you for the meaningful work that you do which makes such positive impacts on our region,” said Sarah Szabo, Community Relations Coordinator, Carolina Panthers.

Jaci Foister, P.E. teacher at Dunston Primary, applied for the grant. In addition to this grant, Ms. Foister, who teaches at Dunston Primary and Mary Ford Elementary, recently was awarded a Cooper River Bridge Run grant for both schools to increase physical activity.

“As a physical education teacher, my goal is to help children reach their healthiest potential in the gym and throughout the school day,” said Jaci, “Healthy, active children are better learners. With the majority of a child's day spent at school, increasing student access to physical activity and movement in the classroom is extremely important.”

Janice Malone, principal of Matilda F. Dunston Primary School, expressed her gratitude, “Ms. Foister places students at the center of all that she does. We are fortunate to have her talent and passion at our school. Thank you to the Carolina Panthers for supporting our young students. This grant will make a tremendous impact on students for years to come.”
