CCSD's Department of Exceptional Children is launching the first Project SEARCH site in Charleston County!

Ten student interns from high schools across CCSD ( Burke, North Charleston, Stall, Wando and West Ashley) will begin their year-long internships at the Embassy Suites hotel on August 21st.

A Meet and Greet event was held June 19th for the interns and their families, hotel management team, and Project SEARCH steering committee team members.

Light hors d’oeuvres and sparkling refreshments were served in the atrium at the hotel while the interns and event attendees had the opportunity to meet and share their excitement for the upcoming internship year.

The Project SEARCH instructor for the 2019-20 school year, Paula Carr, was introduced at the event and spoke about her excitement for the opportunities that lie ahead for the student interns. Mary Stahl, CCSD Department of Exceptional Children Program Coordinator, has led this initiative for the school district and is excited for the students to have opportunities to further develop their employability skills and gain valuable work experience.

North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey attended the event as a special guest and spoke to the interns about the importance of employment and its impact on the community.

Project SEARCH is a collaborative initiative with CCSD, Embassy Suites by Hilton Charleston Airport Hotel & Convention Center, SC Vocational Rehabilitation (VR), AccessAbility, and SC Developmental Disabilities & Special Needs (DDSN).

Project SEARCH is a nationally-recognized work-based learning model for transition-age high school students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).
