Moultrie News Honors Athletes

Eight Charleston County School District senior athletes were honored May 22, 2019 by the Moultrie News at their annual Best of 2019 Prep Sports celebration.

The event, held at Alhambra Hall highlighted the wide-ranging and outstanding performances of these high school athletes on their field, in the classroom and in the community.

Seven students from Wando High School and one student from Academic Magnet High School were honored and recognized by emcee Dean Stephens, a local television personality, and guest speaker George Rogers, University of South Carolina 1980 Heisman Trophy Winner.

The Best of Prep Sports Awards is an incredible event for this community," said Moultrie News Sports editor, Frankie Mansfield. "There’s something so powerful about gathering 40 of the area’s best athletes together to share their remarkable stories and discuss the dreams they’re fulfilling. We hope, in some small way, we’ve properly recognized what they’ve already accomplished and encouraged them to continue blossoming into the leaders of tomorrow. The level of outstanding talent in our community is rare. It deserves to be celebrated. We’re fortunate to be able to do that the Best of Prep Sports Awards."

The Courage Award is designed to recognize a top-tier athlete who has conquered extraordinary situations or circumstances during their season or career. Academic Magnet senior Colin Baker is one of the nation’s top runners. He was challenged midway through the spring with a devastating hurdle. Five days after Baker broke a 31-year-old state record in the 3,200-meter race, his mother, Blythe, passed away from a complication with bone cancer. Baker dedicated the rest of his season to his late mother. Baker accomplished everything he set out to do, winning his third straight state title in the 3,200 this time by nearly 29 seconds with the fastest time run in any meet in South Carolina this season. He returned the following day to win the 1,600 state championship for the first time in his career, breezing across the finish line more than eight seconds before anyone else. Of the accomplishments, Baker said: “I felt like I owed it to my mother, for all the support she gave me. I do believe she was there supporting me and I think she always will be. I hope she can continue to guide me in the right direction as she always has, just from a more intangible way now.” Both of the championships came on Mother’s Day weekend.
