Petersen Family

At Pinehurst Elementary School, learning happens every day. But for one family, something even more special is happening here, too. The Peterson and Petterson family - a grandparent, a daughter-in-law (Wando Class of 1989), and a grandchild (Wando Class of 2020) - plus a cousin (Wando Class of 1991) - each teach under the same roof.

Biz Town

Charleston County School District and Acceleration Schools hosted the 2026 Junior Achievement BizTown Charleston.Junior Achievement (JA) is the world's largest organization dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their future, and make smart academic and economic choices.  

Nutrition Services

Charleston County School District’s Nutrition Services Department recently received grant funding from the South Carolina Department of Agriculture to purchase and serve Certified SC products, including fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, honey, and more. To kick off this initiative, students enjoyed a special “Breakfast for Lunch” during National School Breakfast Week, featuring locally milled grits and the opportunity to hear from special guest speakers.

Future Teacher

Meet Delaysha Pinckney. She is in twelfth Grade at Baptist Hill High School. Pinckney is currently interning at Baptist Hill Middle School, with mentor teacher Ms. Freeman, who teaches 6th-grade math. 

Thespian Wando

Congratulations to the Wando High School Theatre Department for an incredible showing at the Palmetto Dramatics Association/International Thespian Society Festival. Their production, Day Six by Ed Monk, was awarded a Superior rating by the Palmetto Dramatics Association and has been selected for Chapter Select at the 2026 International Thespian Society International Thespian Festival.

Bryan Coleman, principal of Thomas C. Cario Middle School, was recognized for being selected as the recipient of the prestigious South Carolina Council for Exceptional Children Principal of the Year Award. The honor recognizes Coleman's outstanding contributions to advancing opportunities and outcomes for exceptional children and youth.

Cario Essay

Thomas C. Cario Middle School is proud to celebrate a standout achievement: one of its own won the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 269 Essay Contest. Adrian Phan earned first place in his grade (eighth grade) and was recognized at a dinner on February 19, 2026, where he received a $200 prize. 

Chavez

Meet Iris Itzel Vieyra Chavez. She is in twelfth Grade at Baptist Hill High School. Chavez is currently interning at Baptist Hill Middle School, with mentor teacher Mr. Butler, who teaches seventh grade.

Otto German

CCSD and Moultrie Middle School hosted a special dedication ceremony honoring a true Mount Pleasant community leader, Coach Otto B. German, on Friday, February 20, 2026. The event honored German for his tenure in serving youth across the Lowcountry by naming the basketball court at Moultrie as the Coach Otto B. German Court.

Teach Charleston

TeachCharleston, CCSD's alternative certification pathway for talented, knowledgeable, and passionate individuals seeking South Carolina teacher certification, has been a success across the district. It is a three-year program that includes required training and activities designed to support teachers’ development.

Tre'Von Spillers

A proud product of CCSD, Sonya Jones is a 1981 graduate of C.A. Brown High School. Her academic foundation includes a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management and a Master’s degree in Education. Sonya holds professional certifications in Reading and Career and Technology Education (CTE). Sonya’s current role is a Title I Program Compliance Administrator.

Noah wins jounralist of the year


Wando High School senior Noah Iverson, co-editor in chief of Tribal Tribune newsmagazine and online news, has been named the 2026 South Carolina Scholastic Journalist of the Year (JOY) by the SC Scholastic Press Association (SCSPA)  and the Journalism Education Association (JEA).

Angel Oak

Johns Island Elementary School is proud to announce that teacher-librarian Jennie Church recently received the South Carolina Association of School Librarians New Professional Award, a distinguished honor recognizing exceptional contributions to school library programs across the state.

Tanger Grants

As part of its ongoing dedication to education and community impact, Tanger Outlets Charleston has announced the recipients of its 2025 TangerKids Grants. Local winners include North Charleston Creative Arts Elementary’s robotics program; Septima P. Clark Academy’s engaging literacy initiative; and Wando High School’s special-needs workforce and independence-readiness program.

MMA robotics

Military Magnet Academy (MMA) is proud to announce that its FIRST Tech Challenge robotics team, TalonSkies (Team 24769), will represent South Carolina at the United States Governors Cup. The national robotics showcase will take place at the historic DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., in late February 2026.

Measles Information

CCSD is closely monitoring the measles outbreak currently impacting South Carolina. While cases are concentrated in the Upstate and Columbia areas, CCSD Nursing Services is prepared and working in coordination with the South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) to keep students and staff safe.

Board of Trustees

The month of January marks School Board Recognition Month. Charleston County School District (CCSD) joined districts around the state in participating in School Board Recognition Month to honor the contributions and service of school board trustees.

CCSD is proud to celebrate six high schools that have been recognized by the College Board on the 2025 Advanced Placement (AP) School Honor Roll, a national distinction honoring schools that expand access to rigorous coursework while supporting strong student outcomes. This marks an increase from four CCSD schools recognized in 2024.

CCSD will open its School Choice and Early Learning application process for the 2026-2027 school year on January 7, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. The window for School Choice applications will close on February 12, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. Early Learning will continue accepting applications through October 2, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. 

Facilities

The start of the new year was monumental for Charleston County School District’s Capital Programs, specifically in the North Charleston area. Two new school buildings opened to students and staff (Ladson Elementary School and Morningside Middle School), and the North Charleston Track and Field is ready for competition.

Achieve3000

Amelia Radhakishun, a sixth grader at Laing Middle School, scored the most points of any middle school student in the entire state of South Carolina on Achieve3000's Literacy MS (middle school) platform.

In her first year as principal, Accolla has quickly distinguished herself as a servant-leader grounded in purpose, humility, and a deep belief in every child’s potential.

Charleston County School District (CCSD) is proud to announce Corey McDonald, principal of Septima P. Clark Academy, as the 2025 Star Rookie Principal. McDonald is being honored for his exceptional first year of leadership, his deep belief in every student’s potential, and his rapid success in strengthening instruction, school culture, and postsecondary readiness.

Haynes

Charleston County School District (CCSD) is proud to announce Chris Haynes, principal of Jerry Zucker Middle School of Science, as the 2025 Star Principal for the Middle School Learning Community. Haynes is being recognized for his transformational leadership and his success in improving academic, behavioral, and social-emotional outcomes for students.

Charleston County School District (CCSD) is proud to announce Vanessa Brown, principal of the Cooper River Center for Advanced Studies (CRCAS), as the 2025 Star Principal for the High School Learning Community. Brown is being recognized for her transformational leadership, her commitment to equity, and her track record of expanding academic and career opportunities for students.

Pallagio

Charleston County School District (CCSD) is proud to announce Paul Pallagi, principal of Pinehurst Elementary School, as the 2025 Star Principal for the Elevation Learning Community. Pallagi is being recognized for dramatically improving student outcomes, strengthening instructional practices, and building a collaborative, inclusive school culture at Pinehurst.

Condon

Charleston County School District (CCSD) is proud to announce Judith Condon, principal of Johns Island Elementary School, as the 2025 Star Principal for the Elementary Learning Community. Condon is being honored for her people-centered leadership, her focus on building strong school culture, and her record of significantly improving student outcomes.

STAR Principals

Charleston County School District (CCSD) recognized six Star Principals of the Year on Friday, December 5, 2025. They were nominated by their peers and selected through a competitive application process based on their leadership and work to improve student outcomes and implement strategic change.

Morningside Middle

The Palmetto AI Pathways Program is bringing technology to life for students across South Carolina. Through a dynamic partnership among SC Competes, IT-oLogy, and the University of South Carolina, middle school students are gaining hands-on experience with the future of robotics and artificial intelligence. 

Project Search

Charleston County School District (CCSD) has long recognized the success of Project SEARCH, a seven-year-old program offered by CCSD, which has served over 50 students. Project SEARCH is a collaborative partnership between the Charleston County School District’s Department of Exceptional Children, MUSC, and South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation. Together, these partners provide students with disabilities a year-long, immersive internship experience that builds real-world job skills. This collaboration ensures strong training, supported employment opportunities, and a smooth transition from school to competitive work.

Charleston County School District (CCSD) and The Citadel Zucker School of Education have partnered to provide critical professional learning centered on student safety and well-being. Last week, more than 60 school counselors, psychologists, social workers, and student support staff gathered for a full-day training on the Ethical Practices of Suicide Assessment and Safety Planning.

Charleston County School District (CCSD) is proud that the LOCAL Partnership, launched last Spring, has gained great traction. The LOCAL (Linking Opportunities to Classrooms and Learners) program is designed to strengthen partnerships between the Charleston County School District and local businesses and community organizations, building an important ecosystem of support for our students.

Whitesides Elementary

On Friday, November 7, 2025, Mamie P. Whitesides Elementary School celebrated its new Reading Passport Program with a Patio Popcorn Party for students who have completed the first milestone in the program. Eight students were recognized for reading at least five of the Passport Books.

For the first time in school history, Charleston County School of the Arts (SOA) is a South Carolina Blue Ribbon School. State Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver and Governor Henry McMaster recognized SOA and five other South Carolina schools last week at the Statehouse for earning the 2025 Blue Ribbon School honor. 

Sanders-clyde

Students in kindergarten through second grade at Sanders-Clyde Elementary recently took their families into the imaginative world of "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak. Under the direction of Drama Teacher Stella Williams, this performance brought the beloved story to life through theatre, movement, music, and creative collaboration. 

Palmetto State Teachers

Stiles Point Elementary School’s Kate Atkins was chosen as one of only eight educators from across South Carolina to participate in the Fall 2025 Strategies for Teacher Advancement and Renewal Seminar (STAR). The seminar was held on Seabrook Island from October 20 to 24, 2025. 

AMHS

Academic Magnet High School completed a dominant run in the South Carolina High School League AA state playoffs with a 6-0 victory over top-seeded Landrum in the state finals. The victory gives the Raptors back-to-back SCHSL AA state championships.

Wando girls tennis

For the second year in a row, and the 10th time in program history, Wando High School is a state champion in girls’ tennis. The Warriors edged Spartanburg, 4-3, in the South Carolina High School League AAAAA Division 1 team finals on Saturday, November 8, 2025, a the Cayce Tennis Center.

The 2025 South Carolina School Report Cards released today by the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) show Charleston County School District (CCSD) continuing a steady upward trajectory in performance, with notable gains at the elementary level and continued progress across all grade spans.

Two employees of the Charleston County School District (CCSD) sprang into action on Friday, October 10, 2025. CCSD maintenance employees were cutting concrete at Angel Oak Primary School when a saw kicked back, striking an employee in the face and causing a severe laceration. In that critical moment, Jerome Wine immediately called 911, applied pressure to control the bleeding, and stayed composed until Nurse Malori Hay arrived.

AC Corcoran

A.C. Corcoran Elementary School Principal Chris Holbrook recently accepted a “game-changing” donation of $10,000 from Advanced Technology International (ATI) through its Foundation to support students and families at Corcoran.

North South Golf

Two golfers from the Charleston County School District will extend their high school careers for one more weekend. Wando High School senior Ava Kaplan and West Ashley High School senior Bella Bozard will participate in the North-South All-Star Golf Tournament at River Falls Plantation in Spartanburg on November 1-2.

LaToya Smith

LaToya Smith is in her third year as principal of North Charleston Creative Arts Elementary School, but she is a seasoned educator with 25 years under her belt. The Beaufort native came to Charleston in 2008 and was placed just down the road at North Charleston Elementary School. Smith considers it an honor and a privilege to serve in an administrative role in the same area where she began her educational journey with Charleston County School District (CCSD). 

Legend Yearbook

Wando High School continues to set the bar high in student journalism. The South Carolina Scholastic Press Association (SCSPA) recognized the school’s yearbook, Legend, as the Best Yearbook in South Carolina for an unprecedented fifth consecutive year. The 52nd edition, titled “It’s Our Turn,” marks the sixth time Wando’s publication has received this esteemed recognition. 

Future Teachers

High school students from schools throughout Charleston County School District (CCSD) came to the Future Teacher College Fair at Royal Missionary Baptist Church. These prospective educators interacted with recruiters and staff members from 17 colleges and universities, as well as two educational organizations.

SCHSL

The Academic Magnet High School boys’ swimming program has won multiple individual and relay championships at the state meet over the past several years, but hadn’t won a team state title in over a decade. That stretch ended on October 10, 2025, as the Raptors won the South Carolina High School League AAA championship at the University of South Carolina

Charleston County School District (CCSD) staff members are committed to serving students in every capacity, including matters related to substance abuse. Now, CCSD has additional resources to support its efforts; the Public School Districts’ Opioid Recovery Trust (PSDORT) has awarded Charleston County School District (CCSD) a grant of nearly $500,000 to fund programs designed to address the impact of the opioid crisis on students and their families. CCSD is one of 39 school districts nationwide to receive 51 grant awards.

Hispanic Heritage Month

 Many of Charleston County School District’s (CCSD) former Hispanic students have come full circle, returning to the district as employees and as bridges of hope and understanding. Working as educators, interpreters, bilingual secretaries, and family liaisons, they use their personal journeys of learning a new language and adapting to a new country to guide others. Their work ensures that Hispanic families arriving today are not alone - they have advocates who truly understand their path and are ready to walk beside them.

Biliteracy

The SC Seal of Biliteracy is a nationally recognized credential granted by the South Carolina Department of Education that certifies a student’s high proficiency in English and at least one other world language. The Seal is earned when the student has attained a minimum of a 3.0 English Language Arts grade point average (GPA) or 4.4 composite score on ACCESS and at least an intermediate mid-level of proficiency in a language other than English.

Heather Studer

The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce has announced the members of the Leadership Charleston Class of 2026, marking the 53rd year of the region’s premier leadership development program. Among the distinguished class of over 70 professionals is Heather Studer, Director of Planning and Facility Use for Charleston County School District (CCSD).

Operations Employee of the Year

Charleston County School District (CCSD) proudly announces the 2025 Operations Division Employees of the Year, celebrating five exceptional team members who exemplify dedication and service. These individuals represent the best of the district’s commitment to operational excellence across essential services that keep schools running safely, efficiently, and with care.

Education Foundation

At a Special Called meeting on October 1, the Charleston County School District (CCSD) Board of Trustees unanimously voted to adopt the bylaws of the new Charleston County School District Education Foundation. The bylaws, adopted as amended, formally establish the Foundation as an independent philanthropic initiative dedicated to strengthening public education through community partnerships and private support.

James Simons Sign

James Simons Montessori School unveiled the installation of a new school sign in the front office on Monday, September 29, 2025. Throughout a two-year process, the sign was designed by Montessori graduate, Isabel Beeson, and adopted to celebrate the school’s 100-year anniversary in 2019.

MMA Foundation

As we head into the weekend, we’re monitoring the weather and making sure our schools and families are ready for whatever comes our way. While the track and strength of the system are still uncertain, forecasts show that it’s possible South Carolina may see impacts as early as Monday.

Celina Anthony

Celina Anthony, Charleston County School District’s (CCSD) Title I Bilingual Coordinator, was recognized among other Latino community leaders and by Smart News at the “Orgullo Hispano Gala” (Hispanic Pride Gala) on September 7, 2025, for her outstanding contributions to the Hispanic community and the positive impact she has had on students and families in CCSD.   Smart News said Anthony’s service inspires and strengthens the Hispanic community as a whole.

Stephanie Grayson, Director of Instructional Data Support; Andrea Mick, Assistant Director of Specialized Support Services; and Mary Stahl, Director of Secondary Exceptional Children Services and Supports, were selected to participate in Cohort 28 of the South Carolina Institute for District Administrators (IDA) Leadership Program and successfully completed the program on August 26, 2025.

The DoSS Year in Review celebrates the successful 2024-2025 academic year achievements of Charleston County's Department of School Support (DoSS) and its collaborative partnerships with schools, families, and the community. The report showcases how dedicated teamwork ensured every student had opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive through various engagement events, outreach initiatives, and programs that supported staff, students, and families alike.

Charleston County School District (CCSD) students demonstrated strong academic growth on the 2024–2025 End-of-Course Examination Program (EOCEP) assessments, according to results released today by the South Carolina Department of Education. CCSD improved in Algebra, English 2, and U.S. History while remaining above state averages in all four tested subjects.

Charleston County School District (CCSD) is proud to share results from the South Carolina Department of Education’s SC READY assessments for the 2024–2025 school year. These results reflect the performance of all students tested in grades 3–8, including those who may have only recently enrolled in CCSD schools. Even with this broader measure, CCSD students achieved historic gains, once again setting district records and outperforming the state in English Language Arts (ELA), Math, and Science. 

Rotary

The Historic Rotary Club of Charleston is currently accepting applications to sponsor a local high school student for an outbound exchange for the 2026-2027 school year. The Rotary International Youth Exchange Program offers teenage high school students ages 15-19 an opportunity to make new friends, learn new ways of living, open themselves up to different ideas, a new culture, traditions, experiences, and to adapt and gain fresh perspectives while attending high school in another country and living with two to three host families arranged through the local Rotary Club. 

Lowcountry Literacy

The Lowcountry Literacy Project and Charleston County School District (CCSD) are proud to announce a joint initiative expanding literacy support into Title 1 schools. The partnership will bring Orton-Gillingham training and yearlong coaching support to two of CCSD’s Elevation Schools during the 2025–2026 academic year: Matilda F. Dunston Elementary School and Ladson Elementary School

CCSD is setting a new national standard for language access. Dr. Angela Rush, Executive Director of Multilingual Services and Translation & Interpretation Services, recently confirmed that every Office of Translation and Interpretation Services (OTIS) specialist has earned the nation’s first-ever certification for interpreters and translators in education.

Jamboree

The unofficial kickoff to the football season in Charleston County featured 11 teams playing in eight exhibition matchups at the Dave Spurlock CCSD Football Jamboree last night at Wildcat Stadium in West Ashley on Friday, August 15, 2025.

Burke scholarship

Burke High School proudly announces that Class of 2025 graduate Lakiyah Harris has been awarded one of only five Chen Family Scholarships presented through the 2025 Student Impact Project—a competitive, national award recognizing exceptional students pursuing careers in engineering, design, or construction.

CTE

Charleston County School District is proud to announce a significant increase in enrollment at the district's three Centers for Advanced Studies (Cooper River, East Cooper, and West Ashley Centers for Advanced Studies). The Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs at each center provide rigorous and relevant academic, technical, and employability training in a wide variety of high-skill, high-demand, and high-wage career clusters.

Fred Corson

When Wando High School teacher-librarian Fred Corson found out he was selected as a recipient of the 2025 Palmetto State Teachers Association (PSTA) Classroom Grant, he was in the middle of helping students in the school library. It was a fitting location for the surprise announcement, made in person by PTSA Director of Teacher Leadership Craig King.

Jamboree

The lineup of exhibition matchups for the annual Dave Spurlock Charleston County School District (CCSD) Football Jamboree has been updated. The preseason event at West Ashley High School’s Wildcat Stadium is still set for a 5:30 p.m. start on Friday, August 15, 2025. However, St. John’s High School will not participate due to the team not having enough players ready at this time (the Islanders will still field a football team for the 2025 season).

Charleston County School District is proud to announce the appointment of veteran coach and athletics leader Gene Ross as the district’s new Athletic Director. With more than 30 years of experience in high school athletics, Ross brings championship coaching credentials, proven program-building skills, and a deep commitment to student-athlete development to the role.

Internships

Charleston County School District (CCSD) hosted its 12th summer internship program, where rising seniors joined departments to assist in the day-to-day tasks that keep the district running. Congratulations to 37 student interns who earned $17 an hour and a high school work-based learning course credit while gaining valuable professional experience in a position aligned with their career interests.

Back to School Hotline

Charleston County School District’s (CCSD) annual Back-to-School Hotline opens this week to assist parents, guardians, and students for the start of the 2025-2026 school year. CCSD staff members will answer phone calls so they can answer questions and guide families to the proper resources.

Charleston County School District (CCSD) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Abigail D. Woods as the new Executive Director of Expanded Learning. In this leadership role, Dr. Woods will oversee district-wide implementation of all before-school, after-school, and summer learning programs, with a focus on advancing student outcomes, closing achievement gaps, and aligning extended learning experiences with CCSD’s instructional goals as the Expanded Learning Team also transitions into the Academics Division.

Twelve schools will participate in the annual Dave Spurlock Charleston County School District (CCSD) Football Jamboree on Friday, August 15, 2025, at Wildcat Stadium on the campus of West Ashley High School.

Medal of Honor

The National Medal of Honor Center for Leadership (NMOHCFL) launched its inaugural Junior Fellowship Program with a five-day leadership and service boot camp hosted at St. John’s High School in Charleston County, July 14–18, 2025. This groundbreaking initiative brings together 27 students from the school to engage in immersive leadership development, character education, and community service, all grounded in the values of the Medal of Honor.

Eco School

St. James-Santee Elementary Middle School was awarded the Green Flag Level Certification from the National Wildlife Federation Eco-Conscious Project and is the first school in South Carolina to receive this certification level. Congresswoman Nancy Mace (1st District) congratulated Principal LaCarma McMillan on the school’s dedication to conserving the Lowcountry’s environment in a formal letter from her office.
