Thomas C. Cario Middle School is proud to announce it is one of 12 finalists for the 2025 Palmetto’s Finest Awards, an honor from the South Carolina Association of School Administrators (SCASA) that goes to schools that offer the best in innovative, effective educational programs. The Palmetto’s Finest Award is celebrating its 45th year and is one of the most coveted and respected awards among educators.
CCSD is committed to offering rigorous offerings for all students, including Career and Technical Education courses that open doors for students to pursue high-paying, highly competitive careers. The College Board recognizes the district’s efforts as well, as four high schools were recently honored with the AP (Advanced Placement) Computer Science Female Diversity Award: Burke High School, Charleston County School of the Arts, Lucy Beckham High School, and R.B. Stall High School.
Flint Mincey’s day starts at 3:00 a.m. so that he can drive two hours from his home in Loris, South Carolina to North Charleston. He is the Automotive Collision Repair Technology instructor at the Cooper River Center for Advanced Studies (CAS). The commute and the work make for long days, but Mincey said it is all worth it.

Three teachers from Charleston County School District (CCSD) have additional financial support to increase opportunities for students in their classrooms, thanks to the TangerKids Grants. Michele Linn (Springfield Elementary School), Cate Mortensen (Matilda F. Dunston Elementary School), and Leea Power (Laing Middle School) are receiving funding through the year’s program.
