3rd Grade Academic Interventionist

Rosalee Ashley, or Rosie as she is affectionately called, is the 3rd grade Reading Interventionist at Meeting Street Elementary at Burns. She is a native of Charleston, South Carolina and just recently moved back home from living in Tallahassee, Florida for sixteen years. Rosie attendee Florida A&M University (FAMU) and received her Bachelors Degree in Early Childhood Education. She worked at John G. Riley Elementary as a teacher for 10 years, teaching mostly 3rd grade. Rosie then furthered her education, receiving her Master’s Degree in Brain Based Teaching from Nova Southeastern University. Rosie’s passion is to help children gain their confidence and love for literacy. When she isn’t reading books, like Harry Potter, the Hunger Games, and Game of Thrones, she is spending lots of quality time with her husband (Jarrod Sr.) two children (Gracen and Sonny), and her dog Santino.

Cassie Cabral is originally from Long Island, New York, she joined us after spending two years in Massachusetts, where she was serving as an AmeriCorps School Counselor in Springfield. In her role, she created strong relationships with students, parents, and the community in the most rewarding ways. During her time, Cassie had the opportunity to connect collegiate student-athletes to students in the Springfield Public Schools for the big sister/big brother program. During these uplifting meetings, the college athletes and students would spend time reading, drawing, dancing, singing, and playing sports. The big sister/big brother program came from Cassie’s own experiences during her time as a collegiate athlete as she wanted to continue this passion in her career with students. Cassie received her B.A in Sociology at Adelphi University and a M.E.d in School Guidance and Counseling from Springfield College. Outside of school she enjoys coaching field hockey and lacrosse, running and spending time at the beach.

Julia is from down the road and across some bridges on Johns Island, SC where she grew up! She received both her BA (Hollins University) and her Masters of Science (College of Charleston) in Environmental Science.  In addition, she is a Certified Practitioner of Orton-Gillingham through the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators. She started with Meeting Street Elementary at Burns in January 2019 and this is her 10th year of teaching overall. In her free time, she likes outdoor adventures - especially on the water, cooking, working out, and traveling.

Chelsea Chandler is starting her first year as an educator with Meeting Street Schools; however, this will be her 6th year as a teacher altogether. She moved to Summerville, SC from Norfolk, VA the summer of 2017 with her Navy employed husband. Together with her husband, Derrick, Chelsea has 2 adorable dogs, 4 loving cats, 1 very cute hamster and a handful of fish. They are also expecting their first child in November. It’s a girl! Outside of education and her obvious love for animals, Chelsea enjoys gardening with a focus on native plants and attracting butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators. A graduate from Old Dominion University, Chelsea received both her B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies and her M.S. in Elementary Education PreK-6th grade. Prior to life in the Low Country, Chelsea taught in the very school system that she grew up in: Norfolk Public Schools. She is a proud Norfolk native and ODU Monarch for life!

Tamara is was born in North Charleston, SC and later moved to Summerville, SC. Tamara graduated from Summerville High School and furthered her education at South Carolina State University, where she obtained a Bachelor of Social Work degree. Tamara’s unconditional love for children began when she served as a summer camp counselor for the All Star summer camp in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Tamara attended graduate school at University of South Carolina in Columbia and obtained a Master of Social Work Degree. While attending University of South Carolina, Tamara served as a School Social Work intern at Jackson School in Camden, South Carolina. Tamara then returned to the Charleston area to serve as a Program Management Intern at Charleston Communities in Schools in North Charleston, South Carolina. After obtaining her master’s degree, Tamara worked as a Relief Counselor at Carolina Youth Development Center and completed her tenure there as a Case Manager for Community Based Prevention Services. In her spare time, Tamara enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, singing, dancing, attending concerts and crafting.

Cole is starting her first year as a PreK Teaching Fellow at Meeting Street Elementary @Burns. She is originally from the big city of Cheraw, SC but moved to Charleston to attend the College of Charleston. After obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Women’s and Gender Studies with a minor in Communications, Cole decided to continue to grow in Charleston. Cole has always had a passion for helping others, before graduating the College of Charleston, she helped lay the foundation for the Cougar Food Pantry. After graduation, Cole was an intern at the YWCA where she had the opportunity to create and lead workshops for their Career to Success Series. Outside of school and work, Cole enjoys writing, creating/listening to music and, most importantly, being surrounded by family and friends.

Kenneth Coles is beginning his first year as a Teacher at Meeting Street Elementary. He was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. After graduating from high school, Kenneth joined the United States Navy and served for a period eight years, and was honorably discharged. While serving in the Navy, Kenneth began matriculating at Morgan University and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Mental Health. Shortly thereafter, he was hired by his 3rd grade teacher who had become a principal in the Baltimore City Public School System and began teaching. Over a span of 15 years, Kenneth has worked in or around the Baltimore School System in many different capacities and has varied experience. He most recently joined the ranks of Teach For America and has relocated to South Carolina. He is a father of two, enjoys a consistent fitness routine, loves to travel and cook and more importantly, loves to eat good food. Go Ravens!

Cody Dixon is a first year music teacher at Meeting Street Academy Burns. He has taught with several workshops and summer camps as well as done private lessons for the past 3 years. After Graduating from College of Charleston with a Bachelor's in Arts Management and Music he has taught music and creativity with his Non Profit Soul Power Productions as well as produce events as a sound engineer. Even outside of work and education music is his primary focus. He records himself as well as other artists and plays around town frequently. If it's not music based its the outdoors. Jordan Downey is the school social worker for Meeting Street Elementary @ Burns. She is from Nashville, Tennessee. She has lived in Knoxville where she received her Bachelors in Psychology from the University of Tennessee as well as Columbia where she received her Master’s in Social Work from the University of South Carolina. Before coming to Meeting Street, Jordan has worked with Duke University’s Talent Identification Program and their students for several years serving in their residential camps. She worked with Homeless No More SC and Richland County School District One as an MSW Intern. Jordan has also assisted with several non-profits in the South Carolina area that focus on empowerment of children and their families. Jordan has tried to use her passion for helping children, youth, and their families guide her throughout her career. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her pets, visiting family and friends, cheering on the UT Vols, starting new DIY projects, and discovering new foods.

Dixie was born and raised in South Carolina and attended Clemson University where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology. After graduation Dixie moved to New York City where she worked for a national education nonprofit called City Year. She started as an AmeriCorps Member and gave a year of service in East Harlem which is one of the many under served communities City Year New York works in. Dixie also held the role of Team Leader, Program Manager and Senior Program Manager during her time there. She oversaw tutoring, mentoring, and event planning that her AmeriCorps members provided and she acted as a liaison and teammate to the teachers, faculty, staff and administration at the many schools she managed. In her spare time Dixie enjoys traveling, cooking, spending time with family and friends, and singing off-key at all the best country concerts.

Kelly is a founding member of the MSEB staff where she spent the past three years teaching Kindergarten and serving as the grade level chair. Before coming to Meeting Street, Kelly was a Teach For America Corps Member where she taught Kindergarten in the Mississippi Delta for three years. Kelly graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of South Carolina with a B.A. in Early Childhood Education. She then received her Master of Education in Elementary Education from Delta State University. She is passionate about character education and believes it is extremely important to help students develop holistically. In her free time, Kelly enjoys reading, going to the beach, and spending time with her friends and family. She is very much looking forward to another great year at Meeting Street!

Sara Foreman was born and raised in South Carolina and attended the College of Charleston where she received a Bachelor of Science in Special Education with 4 state certifications (including Early Childhood Education). After working in both Berkeley and Charleston County School Districts, Sara purchased a private preschool in West Ashley, SC where she wore many hats – owner, director, and 4K lead teacher. Sara oversaw the preschool for 10 years before selling the business and returning to Charleston County School District to teach Child Development. When Sara was given the opportunity to become a founding member of Meeting Street Elementary at Burns in the Pre-K program, she jumped at the chance! She believes that early childhood education is the foundation for educational success and loves that she will be part of a team that believes every child should be given the opportunity to achieve! In her free time, Sara loves to spend time with her family (she has 8 children, ages 1-15), going to Disney World, napping, watching Perry Mason episodes, baking, and couponing.

Shealene George joins us from Albany N.Y. where she was born and raised. Shealene’s love for working with children became well known when she began her work at an after school program. Her passion for helping children learn and grow became prominent when she began entering classrooms during her college studies. Shealene graduated from the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY with her bachelor’s degree in childhood education; she then completed her master’s degree at Russell Sage College in Troy NY, with a certification in Special Education. Shealene has a tremendous amount of experience working with children in both the general and special education setting. Shealene is passionate about pushing children to their highest potential. Outside of the classroom Shealene loves to spend time with her family, friends, and her dog Cooper; and going to the beach.

Mollie Grantham is a Special Educator at Meeting Street Elementary Burns. Originally from Illinois, Mollie has lived in many different cities but now calls Charleston, SC home. She has been a Special Educator for 10 years and has experience in elementary and middle school classrooms, specializing in reading support and interventions. Ever the social butterfly. Mollie enjoys organizing staff and student events to foster a positive school community. She is mother of 3 adorable children, Jacob, Ruthe, and Lucas. Erica received both her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and Master’s Degree in Special Education from Endicott College.  In her classroom, Erica strives to create a welcoming and enjoyable environment for all students.  She strives to help her students feel successful by helping them reach their goals and challenging them along the way.  Outside of school, Erica enjoys spending time with friends and family, working out, reading, and going to the beautiful beaches in Charleston! Erica has loved being a member of the Meeting Street family and is thrilled to be starting a new adventure at MSE@Burns!

Michelle Heggie was born in Maryland but raised in Charleston South Carolina. She attended Springfield College where she received a Bachelor's Degree in Human Service. After graduation Michelle became a full-time mother to Makari who attends Meeting Street Elementary at Brentwood. After a year of mothering she began working at the Disabilities Board of Charleston County with adults who have special needs. After five years with the adults she moved within the Disabilities Board of Charleston County to the Charles Webb Center where she became a Teacher's Assistant to children with special needs. During that time she gave birth to a daughter and was a participant in a 2 year training with South Carolina Program for Infant and Toddler Care. After training ended, Michelle Heggie began to practice Primary Care and Individualized care daily. She also learned how to write lesson plans, plan for field trips, operate feeding machines, and work closely with varies Therapists. Also during her two and a half years at Charles Webb she was a participant in a new pilot called CARA's Kit: Creating Adaptations for Routines and Activities which she practiced daily within her classroom. Michelle's desire for more education also played a huge factor in her enrolling in the Master's Business Administration Program at Strayer University where she is currently working on obtaining her Master's Degree. Once learning how to provide quality care to children daily, Michelle expressed a desire to do more. Michelle applied for a job with the Charleston County School District and was hired at Meeting Street Elementary at Burns as a Teacher's Assistant in the Pre-K classroom where she is eager to apply all that she has learned.

Jalia Kearse is a recent college graduate, beginning her first year teaching here at Meeting Street Schools. She is originally from Orangeburg, SC and attended Clemson University where she received a Bachelor's of Arts Degree in Special Education. Jalia has always been a highly driven and passionate person when it comes to students of color and reflected in her involvements with many different student organizations and various programs during her tenure at Clemson University. She was an Orientation Ambassador the Summer of 2015, became a member of, and eventually the President of the Minority Recruitment Team, and became a Spring 2017 Initiate of the Omicron Phi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. where she served as President for the 2018-2019 school term, just to name a few of her accomplishments. Lexus Lawrence is beginning her career at Meeting Street at Burns as a 3rd grade Teaching Fellow. She was born in Norfolk, Virginia and was raised in Houston, Texas. After she graduated from high school Lexus than moved to Orangeburg, South Carolina to attend the illustrious Claflin University where she received a Dual-Bachelor’s Degrees in Psychology and Politics and Justice Studies. She originally wanted to be a lawyer but after meeting a stressed law student she realized that she wanted to help children instead. During her sophomore year, she was introduced to AmeriCorps Saturday Academy, here she discovered her passion was teaching and she formally added psychology as her second major in order to help guide her in aide to becoming the best educator she can be. After graduation, she moved to Baltimore, Maryland she worked at a national education nonprofit called Notre Dame Mission Volunteers. She started as an AmeriCorps Member and gave a year of service in Baltimore which is one of the many under-served communities Notre Dame works in. She was a little homesick so she returned to South Carolina in mid 2018 and she than was introduced to CDF Freedom Schools, a six week summer literacy and cultural enrichment program designed to serve children and youth in grades K–12 in communities where quality academic enrichment programming is limited, too expensive, or non-existent. She recently completed her second year at Freedom School and is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, INC. In her spare time, she enjoys drawing and painting, interior design, creating things from scratch and spending time with family and friends and Line sisters.

Data Analytics and Extended Day Coordinator

Daniel McKeown joins Meeting Street Schools Burns for the 2019-2020 school year as the Data and Analytics Manager and Extended Day Coordinator. Daniel was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina but moved to Athens, West Virginia to attend Concord University to pursue his undergraduate work in Elementary Education. Daniel began his teaching career with Mercer County as a Title 1 Instructional and Reading Teacher. After two years, Daniel moved back home to South Carolina to be closer to the coast in Beaufort. Daniel taught First grade and Kindergarten in Beaufort County for four years at Joseph Shanklin Elementary. During this time, he completed his Master of Education in Educational Administration, served on district and school committees, wrote district-wide curriculum, mentored new teachers, and evaluated teacher performance. In 2018, Daniel started as Director of Development and Marketing for the Neighborhood Outreach Connection, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting poverty. Admiring MSS success over the years, Daniel is thrilled become a part of the MSS Burns family. Daniel loves to relax with Brian and their two dogs and cat, search for shark’s teeth, read books that take him to a different world, and sing and dance to music.

Kalen Milford was born and raised in Charleston, SC. He is a graduate of Charleston Southern University where he played football and achieved his Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences, and later received his Master of Science in Organizational Leadership in Counseling from Springfield College. He has an extensive background working to strengthen families and the community. He has operated as the coordinator of several nonprofit organizations, in which he has served as a specialist in alternatives to incarcerations and fostered relationships between various organizations in order to provide the resources essential to clients being sponsored. When he in not working he enjoys spending time with his wife and son. He also loves to play and coach sports as a hobby, and he is a die hard Cincinnati Bengals and LA Lakers fan. Aside from sports, other hobbies include working out and keeping his lawn “extra green.” Kalen has a sincere passion for his community which stems from his upbringing and observing changes in the community over the years.

Miracle Mozzee is joining our team at MSE at burns as a first year Pre-K teacher. She was born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina. She attended Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology with a minor in Business Administration in Fall 2018. Miracle has always been a positive role model for her peers and community. While attending Claflin University she worked as a student manager whereas she assisted students and staff with personal development growth activities, relationship building, and academic performance programs which created a balance in student living and learning outcomes on campus. Miracle is very passionate about helping our kiddos excel tremendously. She was once the child that needed that extra boost of confidence to know that she can overcome any obstacle she may face. Miracle believes that our kiddos can build that confidence with-in theirselves when learning by getting uncomfortable to be comfortable. In here spare time she loves cooking, traveling, doing make-up, and taking walks on the beach. She also enjoys meditation if wind, water, or a calming voice is involved she’s definitely at peace.

Danielle Nye is joining Meeting Street Elementary @ Burns as a Special Education Teacher and department chair. She previously taught at Meeting Street Elementary @ Brentwood. Before joining the Meeting Street Schools team Danielle taught with CCSD for four years as a Special Education Teacher at Thomas C. Cario Middle School. Prior to that she spent one year teaching in Hardeeville, South Carolina and a year teaching special education with a school in Parma, Ohio. She is passionate about special education. Danielle is from Cleveland, Ohio and has a bachelor's degree in special education from Miami University of Ohio. While in college she focused on both mild to moderate and moderate to severe special education with a focus on family studies. Outside of teaching, Danielle enjoys spending time with her husband and three dogs, Caitlyn, Lucy and Sullivan. Jigisha Patel, a first year teacher at Meeting Street Elementary brings joy, laughter and a deep passion to help her students. Jigisha has spent her last few years educating students in Memphis, Tennessee. She taught at Memphis College Preparatory Elementary, preparing kindergartners for first grade. Jigisha uses her creative thinking skills to design interactive challenging assignments that are fun and engaging for all students in her class. She also uses her unique background to connect with a diverse range of students so that they all feel included and understood. Jigisha earned her Master's of Arts in Teaching at Relay Graduate School of Education in Memphis and her Bachelors of Science in Education at the University of Memphis. Outside of teaching Jigisha enjoys travelling, running, swimming and spending time with her family. Jigisha was born in Winona, Mississippi and raised in a small town called Covington, Tennessee. Chantay Ravenell is beginning her first year as a Teaching Fellow at Meeting Street Elementary at Burns. She was born and raised in South Carolina and attended the University of South Carolina, where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology. After graduation, Chantay remained in Columbia, where she worked as a social worker with the Department of Social Services. Her passion to serve her community dates back growing up in a rural part of South Carolina and having the opportunity to have teachers and other individuals make a profound impact in her life in Kindergarten and throughout Junior-High school. Dayana Reyes is teaching second grade at Meeting Street Elementary at Burns. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia but raised in Charleston, SC. She attended the University of South Carolina for two years before transferring and graduating from the College of Charleston with a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. After graduation, Dayana moved to Madrid, Spain to fulfill her dream of teaching abroad. She taught sixth grade (a big change!) in a bilingual school for two years. In her spare time, Dayana loves to travel and experience new cultures, attend concerts, read, watch Netflix and spend time with her friends and family. She is super excited to start her first year teaching in the United States!

Allyson Richmond is beginning her first year at Meeting Street Elementary Burns as a Teacher Fellow. She moved to Charleston from Memphis, TN in 2015 and attended Charleston Southern University where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. Allyson was inspired by her kindergarten teacher to pursue teaching and provide the same welcoming atmosphere in her classroom. During her undergrad, Allyson had the privilege of completing her student teaching internship in a first grade classroom at Goose Creek Elementary. She was actively involved with the school by tutoring, helping with the after school program, and building relationships with the students! Outside of the classroom, Allyson enjoys finding new restaurants in Charleston, playing with her puppy named Beale, spending time with her crazy family, and hunting for sharks teeth on Folly Beach!

Taylor Ripley joined us from Lexington, Kentucky, where she completed a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education at The University of Kentucky. Kira Savage grew up in Iowa where she stayed to complete her Bachelor's degree in Child, Adult, and Family Services at Iowa State University. During her undergrad, Kira was an Assistant Teacher at a Child Development Center in Hawaii where her desire to work with students in a classroom setting grew. Upon graduating, Kira moved to Lawton, Oklahoma as an AmeriCorps member to teach 3rd grade in an under-resourced school district. She stayed in Oklahoma for two years where she was able to build meaningful relationships with her students and families. She decided to move to South Carolina where she could continue working with students and families and continue to become a better educator. Kira enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing and snuggling with her cats, exploring the outdoors and new places, reading, and running.

Smith, to obtained her undergraduate degree in Communications. Scott later joined Teach for America and completed her two year commitment in Charlotte, North Carolina. Continuing her teaching career past the two year commitment, Scott also obtained her master's degree in Educational Leadership. Rebekah Shutt is starting her first year as a Pre-K Teacher at Meeting Street Elementary at Burns. She was born in South Carolina and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Columbia College with a Bachelor of Arts. She also received her certification in Elementary Education. After graduation Rebekah moved to Charleston where she taught as a Pre-K Teacher for Meeting Street Elementary at Brentwood. She participated in cheerleading throughout school and has coached competitive cheerleading. Rebekah loves to spend her free time with friends and family, her three dogs (Chewy, Maggie, and Hunter), and cheering on her favorite football team, the Green Bay Packers (Go Pack Go!).

She was born and raised in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia, and she attended Duke University where she studied psychology while receiving a minor in education. She was a Duke Undergraduate Teaching Fellow, and through the Program in Education, received her teaching licensure. She spent the spring semester of her senior year student-teaching in a first-grade classroom. Her student-teaching gave her a stronger passion for education, where she encountered the importance of the social and emotional aspects of learning. Outside of education, Katherine loves to spend time with her family, and she is looking forward to exploring Charleston with her fiancé, Nick. She also loves to read, hike, and cheer on Duke basketball!

Prior to joining Meeting Street, Amol was a technology teacher in Charleston, SC, teaching both high school and elementary courses. As a teacher he focused on helping children develop technology skills that would contribute to their academic, social, and emotional development. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned a B.S.P.H. in Health Policy and Administration and later he attended the University of Maryland where he received his M.B.A. Prior to becoming a teacher, he spent nearly 10 years as a business consultant, primarily in the Washington, DC area. He moved to Charleston, SC to fulfill his desire to work in education and make a difference in the world, as well as to be closer to the coast and enjoy the beauty of the low country. He is happy to have the opportunity to directly support both teachers and students in our mission. Outside of work, he enjoys surfing, paddling, and hiking with his wife, Erin, and their dog, Cody.

Shelby Smith is beginning her first year as the Behavioral Interventions at Meeting Street Elementary. She was born in Anchorage, Alaska but moved to Brooklyn, New York at the age of 3. When Shelby was 8 years old, she settled in Augusta, Georgia with her mother and father. She attended University South Carolina-Aiken where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and became a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. After graduation Shelby took a break from school and took a position as Behavioral Specialist at a therapeutic childcare center. Where she worked with children that have behavioral health diagnosis. After two years as Behavioral Specialist, she was promoted to Lead Behavioral Specialist, where she oversaw staff members in the classroom, conducted weekly meetings and developed lesson plans. Shelby went back to school where she received a Master’s Degree in School Counseling in 2018 and received her credentials as National Certified Counselor. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, trying new foods, spending time with family and friends, and learning the new dances moves to keep up with the children.

Ariana Snowden moved Charleston, South Carolina from Orlando, Florida where she was formerly a Walt Disney World cast member. Originally from Chesapeake, VA, Ariana attended Brenau University in Gainesville, Ga where she received her Bachelors of Fine Arts in Musical Theater and was in numerous productions. At Disney Ariana was a part of the professional internship program and lead teams in Animal Kingdom, at Epcot’s Food and Wine Festival, and in All Star Music Resort. In Ariana’s spare time she likes to craft, follow Pinterest recipes, go to any and all professional athletic events, plan last minute weekend trips, and online shop. Ariana has always been passionate about two things: Musical Theater and children. She is so excited to be a part of this team and get started!

Quadre' Stuckey is beginning his first year as the New Art Teacher at Burns Elementary. He was reared in Mt. Pleasant South Carolina. Mr.Stuckey is a graduate of The Charleston Art Institute, South Carolina with a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Art of Graphic Design. After graduation Quadre' worked as a professional painter, entrepreneur and graphic artist with Chuma Gallery. While working as an artist, Quadre' has published three educational books on Gullah Culture and food. He has done juried art shows with Piccolo Spoleto, exhibitions, and private venue museum throughout South Carolina. Mr.Stuckey has also created logos for MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, a food truck for "Kay's Southern gourmet" also billboard designs/branding collateral for "The Palmetto Palace". Quadre' also works with a nonprofit group called The Gullah Society. As a member of the group, he teaches local students in N.Charleston/Charleston schools how to paint portraits on canvas and the history of Gullah Culture. He is a motivatonal speaker at Northwoods Middle School also the Youth Worship Leader at Holy Trinity AME Church. In his spare time Quadre' enjoys painting, working out, creating music, traveling, playing sports, living life to the fullest, spending time with family and friends, and going to church.

Prior to joining Meeting Street Academy @Burns, Emily was a Pre-Primary Associate Teacher at Ashley Hall for 3 years. She also was Pre-Primary Lead Teacher for Ashley Hall's Summer Program each summer for the past 3 years. Aside from her passion of teaching, Emily has a passion for photography. Chelsea Tolbert will begin her first year as a School Counselor here at Meeting Street Elementary at Burns. She was born and raised in North Charleston, South Carolina and attended Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC where she received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Psychology. After working with the Charleston Police Department’s Camp Hope , the summer before and after her graduation from Presbyterian College, Chelsea realized she had a passion for working with children from underserved communities. After graduating, Chelsea moved back to Charleston and began the Master of Education in Counselor Education program at The Citadel Graduate College. Upon graduation from The Citadel in December 2018, Chelsea began as a substitute teacher with Charleston and Berkeley County School Districts. During that time, Chelsea gained experience working with teachers and students from various backgrounds. Liz came to Charleston to be closer to her family who all live in the Charleston area. Liz was born in Connecticut and attended Fairfield University, where she graduated with a degree in Economics in 2009. After college, Liz moved to Chicago, IL where she was a part of the Teach for America Program. She taught preschool as a 2009 Corps Member and received her Master of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education during her 2 years in the program. After finishing the TFA experience, Liz moved on to work at KIPP Ascend Primary School as a kindergarten teacher, on the West Side of Chicago. Liz continued to work at KIPP Ascend for 5 years teaching and leading in kindergarten and first grade roles. In 2016 she went on to become a founding team member of KIPP Chicago’s second primary school, KIPP One Primary School. While there, she served as a Kindergarten Teacher and most recently, the Assistant Principal, working with the kindergarten and first grade teams. As an Assistant Principal, Liz was fortunate enough to get an opportunity to participate in the Relay Graduate School of Education’s, National Principals Academy Fellowship where she gained powerful professional development. Liz is thrilled to join Meeting Street Schools because of the strong feeling of community and the opportunity to work along side and learn from the amazing teachers, students and families that have created it. Sherrie Vanderhorst is the Operations Receptionist.  She was born in Johns Island, South Carolina.  After graduating from St. Johns High school she attended Beta Tech Technical College where she became a state certified Medical Assistant.  In addition to furthering her education, she worked 20+ yrs in school bus transportation.  Seeking a change of pace she decided and agreed to join the excellent and stellar team at Meeting Street Elementary @Brentwood. Soon after graduation Andrew worked for a non-profit organization serving fathers in the Lowcountry as an Outreach Coordinator and later as an Intervention Specialist before serving youths as a Probation Officer for the Charleston County Department of Juvenile Justice. Tara Warrington joined Meeting Street Schools as Director of Curriculum & Instruction following several years of serving schools in under-resourced communities as an elementary principal in both the public and charter sector. Prior to moving to Charleston, Tara was an elementary principal at the first public charter school for girls in Washington DC in the heart of the Anacostia community. Her ten years as an elementary teacher started in her hometown outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and ended at Fairfax County, Virginia. In addition to teaching, Tara coached both volleyball and basketball. Knowing first-hand the powerful impact sports can have on adolescents, Tara was eager to coach high school girls. Tara received a scholarship to play basketball at Saint Vincent College where she was named Player of the Year and Kodak All-American her junior and senior year. Tara received her undergraduate degree in Psychology and Elementary Education. She received her master’s degree in School Leadership at the University of Pittsburgh. Passionate about equity in education, Tara has dedicated her career to being an advocate for youth and their families living in underserved neighborhoods. She is incredibly grateful and honored to be a part of the Meeting Street Schools team as they work relentlessly to transform education in South Carolina. In her leisure time, Tara enjoys researching health and fitness, cooking, and working out on the beach with her husband, John, and their dog, Harlan.

Shila Wheeler is an Operations Specialist here at Meeting Street Elementary Burns. She moved to Charleston from Boston, Massachusetts in January of 2017. She attended Suffolk University in Boston and ever the history major, she is beyond enchanted by the rich traditions and storied past this amazing city has to offer. Her passion to serve her community began when she acted as Elementary Teaching Assistant for a summer enrichment program geared towards closing the education and opportunity gap for children in underserved communities. Having come from a similar background she was truly able to connect with her students and feels inclined to pay it forward. Shila loves to cook, travel, spend time with her fiancé Kyle and puppy Lola, cheer for her hometown teams (Go Sox! Go Pats! Go Celtics!), and listen to true crime podcasts.
