Imagine thousands of Montessori students from all over the world coming together at the United Nations to discuss global issues and try to find solutions to some of the world's most pressing problems.
Montessori Model UN students formulate, present, debate, and revise positions on current issues that are affecting people of the world. By assuming the perspectives of a citizen of their selected countries, MMUN students not only develop an understanding of the needs and rights of others, but also learn to respect the cultures, the political views, and the belief system of others. Taking on their ambassadorial roles in a Model UN simulation, students research the issue that their UN committees will address. Model UN participants learn how the international community acts on its concerns about topics including peace and security, human rights, the rights of the child, child labor, the environment, food and hunger, economic development and globalization. Model UN delegates also look closely at the needs, goals and foreign policies of the countries they will represent at the event. The insights they gain from their exploration of history, geography, culture, economics and science contribute to the authenticity of the simulation.
When they arrive at the MMUN Conference, students transform themselves into UN Ambassadors and assume the rights and responsibilities of world leaders. Their imaginations propel them to collaboratively create resolutions to our world's most pressing problems. MMUN encourages students to know that they can make a difference. Won't you please make a difference and donate to help make this trip possible? Thank you!
Dear Business Partner:
As a leader of the community, you are well aware of the need for excellent education preparing our youth for tomorrow’s political and social climate. The mission of East Cooper Montessori Charter School is to provide a rigorous public Montessori education guiding children towards academic excellence, lifelong learning and stewardship of the greater community.
We have an opportunity we would like to share with you. Imagine the feeling of helping a student expand their learning journey as a diplomat at the United Nations. Your contribution today will do just that. Every 6th grade student at ECMCS has the opportunity to participate in the Montessori Model United Nations (MMUN). The MMUN program brings together almost 1,000 Montessori students from across the globe to study world issues. The simulation program consists of a year-long process, culminating with a trip to the United Nations in New York City, where Montessori students from all over the world get the hands-on experience of being a UN Representative. There, our students debate the monumental issues of world hunger, terrorism, social injustice, educational inequality and poverty reduction, to name a few.
The MMUN program has made a difference in the lives of our students. While the program itself is in its 7th year, students at ECMCS have only been able to participate three of those years due to the tremendous resource allocation of finances and staff commitment. While we supported the program in its inaugural year, we were unable to make the commitment for several years following. Starting in 2010, ECMCS rededicated staff and financial resources to this program because of its tremendous value to our students.
The true value in the MMUN program is the life-changing impact it has on each student that attends. One student detailed how much she enjoyed meeting so many students her age from other countries and expressed disappointment that she would not have the opportunity to attend again. Another student recently selected her high school career cluster based on the MMUN experience. Teachers and chaperons have also expressed that the culminating event at the United Nations building was an amazing opportunity.
Your $500 business partnership will help ECMCS meet one of the school’s missions of developing business partnerships that add value for both businesses. In exchange for your support, your business will receive communications from a student delegate documenting his or her journey, as well as an invitation to a special business honor event,an engraved plaque, publicity in local media venues, recognition in the school’s yearbook and an option to have your business advertise as an internship site for middle school students.
We look forward to experiencing this journey with you. To participate, please click on the link at the end of this letter to make an online donation. Be sure to add “Business Sponsorship” in the event title when paying online. You can also send in a check.
I would welcome the opportunity to give you a personal tour of ECMCS and introduce you to some of our 6th graders. For more information on MMUN, please visit this website at http://www.montessori-mun.org/ .
