Getting to Know You

Avilas

What inspired you to want to become a teacher?

Working with younger kids inspired me to become a teacher because I’ve realized every kid has their own story and personality. I want to be someone who makes them feel heard, understood, and important.

Do you remember a specific teacher or classroom moment that helped shape your decision to pursue teaching? Please describe it.

A specific moment that shaped my decision to pursue teaching was seeing how the teacher I'm working with makes an effort to get to know every student beyond the classroom. She knows what each student needs and accommodates them in different ways.

What subject or grade level do you hope to teach in the future, and why?

I hope to teach kindergarten because I really enjoy working with younger children and watching them learn and grow. I want to encourage them to become kind, confident, and just good people in general.

Classroom Experience

What has been the most meaningful part of your internship experience so far?

The most meaningful part of my internship has been watching the kids become comfortable with me and
seeing them come to me for support and help.

What is one thing you've learned during your internship that surprised or inspired you?

One thing I’ve learned during my internship is how much of a difference it makes to just stay calm when working with kids. Instead of getting frustrated or lashing out, being patient and calm can help them feel understood.

How has working with students changed or strengthened your desire to become a teacher?

Before my internship, I was unsure if teaching was the route I wanted to take because I heard too
many different stories about the challenges of being a teacher. After having my own experience
working with kids, I can say with confidence that it's something that's worth pursuing.

Looking Ahead

What are your plans after high school (college, major, career goals)?

After high school, I plan to attend a good college and major in early childhood education. My goal is to graduate and become an elementary teacher.

How do you hope to make a difference as a future educator?

I hope to help kids understand that learning can be both fun and meaningful. I want to have a classroom where students feel welcome and are excited to come in and learn every day!

In your own words, why is teaching important?

Teaching is important because you can share your knowledge and inspire kids to believe in themselves. No matter what they may go through at home, I want my students to know they can be and do anything they set their mind to.

Optional Extras

Is there a quote, motto, or message you live by or that reflects your passion for teaching?

“Every child has the potential to succeed when they have someone who believes in them.”

“I'm really grateful for this opportunity because before starting my second internship, I made up my mind that teaching wasn't my thing. After this experience, I've realized how much I love working with kids, and I hope more people take a chance on teaching and realize that, even through all the difficult times, it can be rewarding.
