Getting to Know You

Mishelle Bravo-Ortiz

What inspired you to want to become a teacher?

I like knowing I can positively affect children's development and be someone they could look up to as a role model, and help support them through their education.

Do you remember a specific teacher or classroom moment that helped shape your decision to pursue teaching? Please describe it.

Something that helped shape my decision to pursue a career in teaching was my time in elementary school, when I volunteered to help younger ESL students. I liked how I was able to support them through their schoolwork and improve their understanding.

What subject or grade level do you hope to teach in the future, and why?

I would like to teach at the early education level because I prefer working with young children more than with older age groups, and I want to help build their foundational skills early on.

Classroom Experience

What has been the most meaningful part of your internship experience so far?

The most meaningful part of my internship experience so far was helping the little kids and seeing how happy they were to see me and how eager they were to talk to me.

What is one thing you've learned during your internship that surprised or inspired you?

Something I learned during my internship that surprised me was seeing how far the students could go. For example, students may go from having messy handwriting, struggling to write full sentences, and not knowing what certain words mean to writing neat, complete sentences, clearly explaining word definitions, and excelling in their work.

How has working with students changed or strengthened your desire to become a teacher?

Working with the students helped strengthen my desire to become a teacher. It allowed me to experience what being a teacher is like, and although there were some challenges, the overall experience made it worth it.

Looking Ahead

What are your plans after high school (college, major, career goals)?

I would like to go to college and major in early education and get a degree in teaching.

How do you hope to make a difference as a future educator?

I hope to be an educator that kids can look up to as a positive role model and create an environment where they can genuinely be happy and excited to come to school and learn.

In your own words, why is teaching important?

Teaching is important because it equips individuals with essential skills they need for other professions. It teaches math, science, reading, writing, and way more that you end up needing and using in the future.

Optional Extras

Is there a quote, motto, or message you live by or that reflects your passion for teaching?

“The impact you made today won’t show up until years later.”
