CCSD’s Commitment to a Safe School Environment

The Charleston County School District (CCSD) is committed to ensuring that all students have access to a safe and welcoming learning environment, regardless of their immigration status or that of their families. We understand that recent changes in immigration policies may raise concerns among students and families, and we want to provide clear information and reassurance.

The information below is designed to answer common questions about how CCSD supports our immigrant students and their families. It covers important topics such as school policies, student rights, safety measures, and available resources. Our goal is to provide accurate information, alleviate concerns, and ensure that all students continue to receive a high-quality education in a supportive environment.

Q: What is CCSD's protocol if ICE officials arrive on a school campus?

A: Effective January 27, 2025, CCSD school principals will contact the CCSD Security & Emergency Management (SEM) Office if ICE and/or its officials arrive on school campuses.

At this time, ICE will not be allowed to meet with and/or remove students from our schools or facilities unless they produce a judicial order compelling the district to allow such an action.

Q: What should I know about the recent ICE policy and how it affects my children at CCSD?

A:  All K-12 students have a right to attend public school, regardless of their immigration status or that of their family members. In addition, CCSD does not collect or share information about students' or families' immigration status.

If families have concerns, we encourage them to:

  • Contact their school counselor, social worker, parent advocate, or your child’s principal.
  • Ensure emergency contact information is up to date with the school.
  • Connect with local community organizations for legal and advocacy resources.

Q: Is my child safe at school?

A: CCSD understands that you may have concerns about safety, and we are committed to creating a secure and welcoming environment for all students.

Please know that your child is safe. As a reminder, ICE officials will not be allowed to meet with and/or remove students from our schools or facilities unless they produce a judicial order.

If you have specific concerns, please contact your principal, counselors, social worker, or parent advocate so that we can offer support and address any issues.

Q: What is a judicial order?

A: A judicial order is a legally binding directive issued by a judge that requires an individual or organization to take a specific action.

Examples of a judicial order include:

  • Search warrant – A judge’s written order allowing law enforcement to search a specific location for evidence.
  • Subpoena – A legal document requiring an individual to provide testimony or documents for a court case.
  • Arrest warrant – An order issued by a judge authorizing law enforcement to detain a specific individual.
  • Removal order (deportation order) – A ruling from an immigration judge that requires an individual to leave the country.

Q: What steps should I take if my child feels anxious or afraid to attend school?

A: Please reassure your child that all adults in their building are committed to ensuring their safety. Contact your child's teacher, school counselor, social worker, or other trusted adult for support.

Q: How can I update my child’s emergency contact information in case something happens to me or another guardian?

A: Parents can update emergency contact information by visiting the school office or using CCSD’s online parent portal.

Q: What information does CCSD collect about students and their families?

A: CCSD collects only the information required for student enrollment, such as proof of residency, immunization records, emergency contact details, and academic records. We do NOT collect or track immigration status information from students or their families.

Q: Does CCSD report student or family immigration status to federal agencies?

A: No. CCSD does not collect, store, or share information regarding the immigration status of students or their families with federal agencies. Our priority is to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.
