World Language Grading & Assessment
Our goal is for learners to use language as a means of communication with the world around them — here in Charleston and beyond.
Guided by the South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Standards for World Language Proficiency (2019). Students will build proficiency through three modes of communication:
- Interpretive Communication – Understanding and analyzing what is heard, read, or viewed from authentic texts/videos.
- Interpersonal Communication – Exchanging information and negotiating meaning in spoken, signed, or written conversations.
- Presentational Communication – Sharing information, concepts, and stories with an audience through speech or writing.
To measure students’ language progress our key assessments are:
Performance-Based Assessments: allowing students to demonstrate skills through real-world tasks in the three modes of communication — interpretive (listening/reading), interpersonal (speaking/writing), and presentational (speaking/writing). At the end of each unit, students will be measured in all three skills in an Integrated Performance Assessment.
Students are assessed using rubrics aligned with national proficiency levels:
Novice • Intermediate • Advanced • Superior • Distinguished
