Overview

At CCSD, we believe every student can learn another language — and that language programs grow skills essential for success in today’s interconnected world. World language study empowers students to take risks, build confidence, and communicate with proficiency while strengthening literacy through authentic, meaningful experiences. Through this process, learners develop the critical and lifelong skills that prepare them to thrive, lead, and contribute in a global society.

Our Programs

World language programs in Charleston County School District invite students to explore the world through the study of languages and cultures. CCSD offers Spanish, French, German, and Latin as well as courses tailored for heritage Spanish speakers. Our programs give elementary, middle and high school students opportunities to engage in authentic language learning that grows year by year.

Aligned to state and national standards (ACTFL, 2019 SC Standards), our curriculum emphasizes communication, critical thinking, and global readiness. Students learn to:

  • Interpret authentic texts, videos, and media
  • Interact with others in meaningful conversations, and
  • Share their knowledge, ideas, and perspectives with others.

This approach ensures students don’t just “study” a language — they use it as a tool for communication, literacy, and problem-solving in today’s globalized world.
