India Jenkin - St. John's High School

Meet India Jenkins - a senior at St. John’s High School. Jenkins completed an internship at Angel Oak Elementary School, where she worked with first-grade mentor teacher Josephine Routh.
Getting to Know You
What inspired you to want to become a teacher?
I have always wanted to be a teacher ever since I was a little girl. Teaching was something I always wanted to do. Helping others is a big part of me. I know that I am capable of helping others succeed, and teaching is something that allows me to do that.
Do you remember a specific teacher or classroom moment that helped shape your decision to pursue teaching? Please describe it.
It was one day that I could tell Ms. Routh was very overwhelmed, but the way she handled it inspired me. It showed me that not every day is going to be easy and you're going to have tough days, but you can't let that discourage you because you are here for the students.
What subject or grade level do you hope to teach in the future, and why?
At first, I wanted to only teach elementary school. Now I want to be a Middle School English Teacher. English is my strongest subject, and I know I can help others become better English students.
Classroom Experience
What has been the most meaningful part of your internship experience so far?
The bond and the trust that my students gained with me. Watching their faces light up when I came in for the day instantly melted my heart. They looked up to me, and that made me want to come in every day and make sure that I was helping them to become better students in many different subjects.
What is one thing you’ve learned during your internship that surprised or inspired you?
I have learned that teaching is not as easy as it seems. There are going to be obstacles along the way, but you have to push through them for the sake of your students. Being a teacher is all about the sake of the kids. Most kids have things going on at home, and school is an escape for them. With that being said, having a teacher who really cares about your well-being means a lot to students. I truly believe that I can make a difference in kids' lives, and that's why I want to be a teacher.
How has working with students changed or strengthened your desire to become a teacher?
It most definitely strengthened my desire to become a teacher. Becoming a teacher can help impact kids' lives in so many ways. Having a teacher who not only wants you to succeed but also genuinely cares about you is all a student wants.
Looking Ahead
What are your plans after high school (college, major, career goals)?
I want to gain my Bachelor's Degree, major in Middle School Education, and pursue my dreams as a middle school English teacher.
How do you hope to make a difference as a future educator?
I hope to make a difference as a future educator by being someone who motivates and inspires students to believe in themselves. After spending time as a teacher assistant, I’ve seen how much of an impact patience, encouragement, and consistency can have on kids. I want to create a positive classroom where students feel safe to learn, grow, and know that someone is always in their corner.
In your own words, why is teaching important?
Teaching is important because it shapes the future. Teachers do more than just give lessons; they guide, support, and inspire students to become the best versions of themselves. During my time as a teacher assistant, I’ve seen how much kids depend on encouragement and patience. A good teacher can change how a student feels about learning and even about themselves. That’s why teaching matters to me; it's about making a lasting impact that goes beyond the classroom.
Optional Extras
Is there a quote, motto, or message you live by or that reflects your passion for teaching?
