Registration for Artistically Gifted & Talented (GTR) classes during the Spring semester can be completed here. The last day to register is January 17.

For students who have been identified as Artistically Gifted and Talented, the Charleston County School District offers a slate of after school programs each semester in Dance, Drama, Music, and Visual Art. Class offerings, dates, and locations vary depending on the availability of teachers as well as student interest. Information about these classes and registration forms are shared with families of eligible students in the fall and winter prior to the beginning of each class session.
After school program registration for Gifted & Talented Artistic (GTR) students for the second semester (Spring 2024) is tentatively scheduled to begin on Tuesday, December 5 at 6:00 AM. The registration window will remain open until Wednesday, January 17 at 4:00 PM.
Classes will meet once a week and run from the week of January 29 through the week of April 22 (with the week of April 1 off for Spring Break). These classes are open to students who have already been identified as Artistically Gifted & Talented. Before registering your student for a class, please note its art area and grade level to make sure that your child is eligible to enroll.

DANCE
Fundamentals of DanceInstructor: Heather Merritt
Location: North Charleston High School
Eligible Grade Levels: Grades 4-8
Date/Time: Wednesdays, 4:00 - 5:30 PMThe Fundamentals of Dance program is designed to empower gifted and talented students within CCSD by providing them with a platform to enhance and polish their dance technique. Our classes delve into the realms of choreography and creative expression, offering advanced instruction in jazz, contemporary, lyrical, and ballet. Over the span of twelve weeks, this course aims to instill foundational principles that enable young dancers to enrich their artistic language and elevate their proficiency in dance.
DRAMA
Monologues, Movement Improvisation, and Theatre Games!Instructor: Heather Todd-Schlieper
Location: Cario Middle School
Eligible Grade Levels: Grades 4-8
Date/Time: Wednesdays, 4:00 - 5:30 PMStudy and perform an individual monologue that suits your style! After warming up with some fun theatre games, students will work in groups to bring scenes to life using improvisation skills.
MUSIC
Charleston Children’s ChorusInstructors: Joshua Wald & Anna Reid
Location: West Ashley High School
Eligible Grade Levels: Grades 4-12
Day/Time: Tuesdays, 5:00 - 6:30 PMThe Charleston Children's Chorus consists of vocalists in Grades 4-12 from across the Charleston County School District. In addition to a concert in the spring, the group often performs at area community events, as well. Students can still join Charleston Children’s Chorus if they were not in the group last semester.

VISUAL ARTS
Art Explorations
Instructor: Kate May
Location: Laing Middle School
Eligible Grade Levels: Grades 5-8
Date/Time: Thursdays, 4:00 - 5:30 PMStudents will explore a variety of art materials, develop art techniques, and use their creative problem-solving skills to produce meaningful and unique two and three-dimensional artwork.
Art Exploration in 2D
Instructor: Schai Emanuel
Location: Memminger Elementary
Eligible Grade Levels: Grades 4-6
Date/Time: Thursdays, 4:00 - 5:30 PMArtists will explore traditional and contemporary methods of drawing and painting. Projects will be student-led with the goal of providing more opportunities for choice, authentic growth, and creative engagement in the art-making process.
The Artist Sketchbook
Instructor: Mimi Tierney
Location: West Ashley High School
Eligible Grade Levels: Grades 4-8
Date/Time: Thursdays, 4:00 - 5:30 PMOver the course of the semester, students will create their own sketchbooks while learning how master artists use sketchbooks to enhance their work. They will explore a variety of media formats, including watercolor paint, pen & ink, research collages, printmaking, and advanced processes like en plein air. Students will also utilize a variety of art materials, develop art techniques, and use their creative problem-solving skills to produce meaningful and unique two and three-dimensional artwork.
Ceramics: Hand Building Techniques
Instructor: Tracy Harler
Location: Goodwin Elementary School
Eligible Grade Levels: Grades 4-6
Date/Time: Wednesdays, 4:00 - 5:30 PMIn this class, we will be reviewing and learning hand building techniques and ways we can apply them. Students will then apply what they've learned in coming up with their own creations. Students will glaze their ceramic pieces after their work has been fired in a kiln. We will hold an exhibition on the last day of class.
Drawing with Graphite and Painting in Watercolors
Instructor: Timothy Brown
Location: Camp Road Middle School
Eligible Grade Levels: Grades 6-12
Date/Time: Wednesdays, 4:00 - 5:30 PMThis course will explore traditional techniques in drawing and painting. We will begin with graphite exercises that will lead to completed black and white works. As the class moves towards color, we will practice a variety of watercolor techniques which will culminate in individual paintings.
Explorations in Jewelry, Metals, and Ceramics
Instructor: Julianna McRae
Location: St. Andrews School of Math & Science
Eligible Grade Levels: Grades 4-6
Date/Time: Tuesdays, 4:15 - 5:30 PMStudents will explore jewelry-making techniques with paper, found objects, metal, and clay. Planned projects include bead making, wire sculptures, ceramic pendants, and brooches.
Landscape Painting with Oil and Pastels
Instructor: Jennie O'Dell
Location: Ladson Elementary School
Eligible Grade Levels: Grades 4-7
Date/Time: Thursdays, 4:00 - 5:30 PMStudents will create landscape paintings on canvas using water-soluble pastels.
Mixed Media Exploration
Instructor: Scobey Thompson
Location: West Ashley High School
Eligible Grade Levels: Grades 4-8
Date/Time: Thursdays, 4:00 - 5:30 PMThis class will explore different ways artistic media can be combined and allow for experimentation, choice, and play. Students will be introduced to a variety of media such as bookmaking, monoprinting, relief, paper making, fiber art, collage, drawing, and more!
Tackling Textiles Session 1
Instructor: Angelica D’Antonio
Location: Lucy Beckham High School
Eligible Grade Levels: Grades 4-9
Date/Time: WEDNESDAYS, 4:00 - 5:30 PMStudents will learn traditional textile mediums such as embroidery, crocheting, knitting, yarn painting, and more! Please note that this is one of two sessions that are offered for the same class due to high demand.
