Poetry Contest
Who are you?
CE North’s Poetry Contest
The theme of this poetry contest is to explore who you are, what your identity is, where do you fit or not fit? In the novel, Two Roads by Joseph Bruchac, Cal is trying to figure out who he is and where he fits in the world. Many of us have those same thoughts and feelings and we’d love to see you express it as poetry! If you look on the CE Williams North website and click on the Library Media Center tab, there are many resources and examples to help you. But we want yours to be original because only YOU can explore YOUR identity.
Your poem will be reviewed by a select group of teachers and they will award “superlatives” to outstanding poems such as: Most Creative, Most Honest, Best Rhyme Scheme, etc…
Here is the info you need to know!
- All entries are due by Tuesday May 16th
- One entry per student
- You do NOT have to use your name in the poem
- Make sure to keep your poem school “appropriate” (no profanity, graphic language, etc…)
- Your poem does NOT have to rhyme
- Your poem can be as long or as short as you like
- You do not have to have a title
- You must submit your poem via Google form found on the CEWN’s website or on the Poetry Contest form (ask your teacher or Mrs. Gildea)
- A breakfast will be provided to those whose poem was awarded a superlative!

Two Names Two Paths
In Two Roads, Cal is unsure what his identity is. He isn't sure which "road" in life he is going to take. The poet in this poem feels a similar way and discusses his identity. You can read the poem below and use the worksheet to help you create your own identity poem. *You do not have to structure your poem like this! It's just one way to write an identity poem!*

Helen Gildea, YOUR Librarian
Hi! I'm YOUR teacher-librarian! I grew up in the Lowcountry and have been a teacher and librarian for 15 years! I have been at the CE North site for 4 years and am excited to be part of the 6th grade campus. I love to read (obviously), be outside, play with my kids, go on trips, embroider silly pictures on baby stuff, go to the beach and watch TV. I am here for anything you need and want to help you find the right "match" in the library. Come and see me anytime (with a pass of course)!
