ADMISSIONS SCREENING PROCEDURE and RUBRIC -
All Applicants
All applicants submit their application through School Choice during the allotted window. A lottery is conducted once the School Choice applications close. The lottery tells us the order in which to test students for admission. Once the lottery is complete, phone calls will be made inviting applicants to test. Applicants receive an email through School Choice letting them know their wait list number.
Magnet Qualification for Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade Applicants
Applicants for Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade are tested for admission after their number has been pulled from the lottery. There are more applicants than available seats, therefore, not all applicants are tested. Our lists and number of available seats are always changing and testing continues until all available seats are filled. Raw scores are converted to an age-based national percentile rank. Applicants must receive a 50% or higher to be accepted. Parents will be notified through a School Choice email if their child did or did not qualify. Parents must follow the district guideline for accepting a magnet seat.
Magnet Qualification for Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade Applicants
Applicants for Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade are also entered into the lottery; however, they are not tested. A rubric is used to assess these students. Students in Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade are assessed using previous report cards, and a recent standardized test (MAP or SC Ready). Based on report card averages, and the test scores, points are assigned using the rubric. Parents will be notified through a School Choice email if their child did or did not qualify. Parents must follow the district guideline for accepting a magnet seat.
Rubric for Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grades
Children can earn a total of 18 points for SC Ready or MAP scores and a total of 18 points for grades. The highest point total would be 36, and the lowest point total we would accept would be 12.
