Parent Update 8.18.2020
Good afternoon. This is JICHS with updates for the start school.
On August 17, 2020, the James Board Directors met and approved the motions below. JICHS will begin the school year in a temporary remote instruction mode with no more than 25% of students attending school on a given day. As a default, all students will learn from home or virtually. At this time, the 25% capacity maximum allows us to create learning plans for students with exceptional needs and students who disengaged last spring or have other risk factors. This also allows us to do required MAP testing for all 9th-grade students within the first ten days of school. Again, all other students will begin school in a temporary remote mode.
We are strongly encouraged by the recent decline in COVID-19 cases over the past month. The current ordinances requiring masks appear to be making a difference. For COVID-19 data, please click on the link for SCDHEC County-Level Data, SCDHEC County-Level Data. Hopefully, it will be safe to bring back more students to the building by late September or early October.
Motion 1- approved JICHS Safe School Restart Plan
JICHS will start school in a temporary remote model with no more than 25% of the students attending school on any given day. The board will review the health metrics for Charleston County from DHEC at the September 21, 2020, board meeting to determine if JICHS will remain in a remote start model or transition to a hybrid model no sooner than October 12, 2020. An additional Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for October 12, 2020, to review the medical data for Charleston County.
Motion 2- approve updated 2020-21 Revised School Calendar
Remote Learning Schedule
The JICHS Leadership Team approved the Remote Learning Schedule that is linked below. The schedule closely follows our regular bell schedule. This schedule creates time for direct teaching and learning and time for individual or small group instruction. Wednesday is a modified day incorporating a Social-Emotional Learning Components (SEL) and time for individual or small group enrichment/remediation. Wednesday afternoon is time for additional teacher planning and parent/student communication. Time is embedded for any student to get individual assistance from their teacher every day. We recognize that nothing can replace in-person instruction, but hopefully, this will get students successfully through this Temporary Remote Start.
