  • Traditional Pathways to Certification include the successful completion of an educator preparation program through a college/university or the submission of a valid certification issued by another’s state’s Department of Education.

    The Career and Technology Work-Based Pathway to Certification includes individuals with industry experience in career and technology areas who qualify for certification to teach their vocation in secondary school settings.  

    Career and Technology Education (CATE) Work-Based Certification 

    Alternative Certification Pathways to Certification include different routes to certification for individuals who have not completed a state-approved educator preparation program, but who qualify for one of the various alternative certification programs approved in South Carolina.  

    Alternative Certification Pathway

    American Board allows eligible candidates to pursue South Carolina teacher licensure through a content-specific examination. 

    Program of Alternative Certification for Educators (PACE) enables qualified candidates to gain employment in a public school while successfully completing training and certification requirements for South Carolina teacher licensure.  

    Teach for America (TFA) provides training and development to qualified candidates for a two-year commitment to a public school classroom.  

    Teach Charleston certifies qualified candidates to participate in a district-embedded training and development program while employed as a teacher in a Charleston County School District classroom.

    Teachers of Tomorrow (ToT) encourages qualified candidates to gain employment in a public school while successfully completing on-line training and certification requirements for South Carolina teacher licensure.

    Specialized Certification Pathways have unique application and eligibility requirements.  The request for the issuance of a Specialized Certificate through one of the pathways below must be initiated by CCSD’s Human Resources’ Director of Certification based on the recommendation to hire the eligible candidate.   

    Adjunct Teaching Certificate allows content experts the opportunity to teach up to two credit-bearing courses in their certificate content area within one academic year.  

    Advanced Fine Arts Certificate provides a certification pathway for individuals with a degree and professional experience in an area of the fine arts.
