First Grade Updates
In first grade, the students are learning about the Sun and the Sun’s effect on Earth. They are also learning how the moon appears to change in a predictable pattern. The students are learning about different communities and basic map skills.
-
Second Grade Updates
Second grade is busy learning about the weather! We are studying severe weather safety and how meteorologists use tools to predict and measure weather. We are also learning about clouds and how they can help us predict what's coming.
-
Third Grade Updates

Here are some tips to help you navigate school from home.
- Set a schedule that works for your family, and stick to it each day if possible.
- Be sure to do some type of physical activity a couple of times a day to give your brain a rest!
- Don't stress! We are all in this together!

Fourth Grade Updates
In 4th grade guidance, we will begin to dive deeper into exploring empathy. Some volunteers go "shoe shopping" and they find a shoe and a story in the shoe box they select. After the students share the scenario, we identify how the person may be feeling (sometimes it is helpful to imagine how we would feel if we were in the same situation) and ways we can show that person we care (it is also helpful to imagine what we would like from others if we were in that situation).

Fifth Grade Updates
In fifth grade SAIL math class, we also finished our pre-assessments and began our first unit in the M^3 curriculum "Record Makers and Breakers." I showed the kids a fascinating video from the 2018 Guiness Book of World Records, and the students voted on the activity that they want to track throughout the year: how many cups of water they drink weekly. We reviewed the vocabulary words: variable, horizontal and vertical lines, x and y axes and completed two scenarios where we had to find the constants and variables in each situation.

Computer Updates
Hi Parents,
Since we are spending so much time online and on devices while distance learning, we’re going to focus on being a responsible digital citizen. We’ll continue to learn about internet safety, appropriate use of screen time, and digital literacy (among other topics).
If you have any questions about technology please send me an email.

Spanish Updates
Hola! Across all grades we are currently working on a unit on animals. In this unit, students will be learning social and academic language patterns: greetings, idioms, colloquialisms, and nonverbal gestures. Students will be introduced to new nouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions and demonstratives. They will also continue working on how to express emotions, likes and dislikes (written and verbal). In addition, through some of the choice board activities I hope to practice basic sentence structure, questions, statements and commands. By the end of the year, it is my goal to have all grades familiar with the Spanish Subject Pronouns.
For K5 – 2nd there will also be an emphasis on continuing to work on activities for color recognition, calendar skills, number recognition, parts of the body and conversation skills.
In 3rd- 5th, we will continue to reinforce previously learned concepts and skills, subject pronouns and working on conjugating present tense –ar verbs. In May, we will also be moving towards working with present tense –er & -ir verbs.
If you have not already joined, I invite you all to join the Special Area google classroom where you will be able to find my Spanish choice board activities for students to pick from, read alouds, and information for any live zooms that will take place. If you are not aware of the code that pertains to your child’s grade level, feel free to email me and I will provide it.
Here you will find a great study tool for the vocabulary we are learning. Locate the class I have set up by searching for my username senora_prohaska
For daily opportunities to complete Spanish lessons, I would recommend the duolingo app. In 1st-5th your child has an account setup through me, if you need that login feel free to reach out and I will send it your way (or feel free to create your own). This application provides vocabulary, speaking, listening and grammar exercises.
If you have any questions, feel free to reach out

Music Updates
Hi Parents,This month in music, K - 2 students have focused on learning simple rhythms, movements, and instrumental melodies from French composer, Saint Saens' "Carnival of the Animals." We have especially enjoyed the Cuckoo Bird, March of the Lion, and Kangaroo pieces in this work. Students in 3rd - 5th grades have learned about haikus while making their own soundscapes, rhythmic dictation with an emphasis on Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro and instrumentation from John Lithgow's The Remarkable Farkle McBride. The students of MPA are awesome singers, performers and achievers in music class. It is a joy to teach them. I miss each and every student and I can't wait to see what they have been up to on Google Classroom. B# Meg High -
Art Updates
Creative people are curious, flexible, persistent, and independent with a tremendous spirit of adventure and a love of play. -Henri Matisse, French painter 1869–1954
As we transitioned to virtual learning students were given choice boards with activities for nine weeks. MPA art students have a strong foundation of the Elements of Design. We have worked hard to plan and communicate ideas visually. In partnership with our parents, our focus for the fourth nine weeks is your child’s emotional well-being. I will continue to offer direction and ideas as we work through the rest of the school year. Please continue to turn in work through Google Classroom. Student art portfolios and art show work are currently safely housed in our art studio-classroom.
