Multilingual Learners (MLs)
-
Charleston County has a wonderfully diverse population of Multilingual Learners (MLs) in the Multilingual Learner Program (MLP). This year, over 6,000 students from all over the world representing as many as 80 different languages are enrolled in 80 CCSD public schools and programs. 70 MLP teachers provide services for these students. MLs learn the English language by studying not just English, but science, social studies, and math.
As a program, we focus on all content areas in the ML curriculum. The MLP staff is as talented and diverse as the student population they serve. Our teachers are an asset to our program and prove to be of tremendous assistance to many multilingual families in the district. This dedicated group of teachers work with children in schools, at home, and over the summer to ensure that students' language skills continue to progress and that the lines of communication with parents remain open.
