Charleston County has a wonderfully diverse population of English Language Learner (ELL) students in the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program. This year over 4,000 students from all over the world representing as many as 65 different languages is enrolled in 84 CCSD public schools and programs. 51 teachers provide services for these students. The students learn the English language by studying not just English, but science, social studies, and math.
As a program, we focus on all content areas in the ESOL curriculum. The ESOL staff is as talented and diverse as the student population they serve. Among the 51 teachers are two teachers who have already achieved National Board Certification. Our 17 bilingual teachers are an asset to our program and prove to be of tremendous assistance to many Spanish and French-speaking students’ families in the district. This dedicated group of teachers works with children in school, at home and even in the summer to ensure that language skills continue to progress and that the lines of communication with parents remain open.
