Ashley River’s Shivam Kolwalkar takes title at regional Spelling Bee
There is a new Spelling Bee champion in the Lowcountry: Shivam Kolwalkar of Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary School.

CCSD Scholars Academy ready for first year
A group of 30 ninth-grade students entered the 2021-2022 school year as pioneers. They are part of the first cohort for the Scholars Academy, a partnership between Charleston County School District (CCSD) and the College of Charleston.

West Ashley’s AJ Barnes named CCSD 2021 Teacher of the Year
Adam “AJ” Barnes is Charleston County School District’s 2021 Teacher of the Year. Barnes teaches AP European History, US History, and coaches baseball at West Ashley High School (WAHS). This is his fifth year at the school.

West Ashley Center for Advanced Studies complete and ready for students
The West Ashley Center for Advanced Studies is set to open to students in August 2021. The $42.7 million project is a 100,000 square foot facility located at 4066 Wildcat Way. The four-acre campus is adjacent to West Ashley High School.

Early College High School hosts graduation for inaugural class
One hundred students walked onto the Early College High School campus in 2017, daring to successfully complete a program new to the district. That first year, 20 students left before the tenth day of school, and over the years others moved away from Charleston. Four years later, 71 remain. All of those students graduated with a high school diploma and nearly half with an associate’s degree.
