August 16, 2019
A warm welcome to all new and returning students and families for the 2019-2020 school year!
While still basking in the pride of being named number 1 US public high school 2019 by the US News and World Report, we are eagerly awaiting August 21 when 689 students (record high enrollment) return to the AMHS halls. Over 200 of these are new Raptors, and include the return of foreign exchange students with a young man from Sweden (Hurrah!).
Summer Scholars (August 5-8) was an unqualified success as we hosted nearly all of the entering 185 freshmen. Student mentors and volunteers, as well as teachers and staff, ensured that this week was both fun and informational. The transition experience for our new students is invaluable and only possible through the financial support of PIE (Parents in Education) and the AMHS Foundation. Thank you!
Achievement results continue to soar with 98% of students scoring a 3 or higher on 1355 exams (another record high!). The OECD/PISA (Office of Community and Economic Development/Performance of International Schools) indicators continue to place the math, science, and reading achievement of our G10 students in the top 10% both in the US and world-wide. Scores went up in all areas from our initial assessments in the fall of 2017. In our first year of the AP Capstone program, 99% of students scored a 3 or higher on the G11 AP Seminar course, the prerequisite to AP Research in the senior year. Congratulations to students and teachers!
The class of 2020 consists of 172 students (another record), and 42 of those are currently under consideration for National Merit semi-finalist status! We fully expect this graduating class to break all previous achievement and scholarship records. Hang on to your hats!
This coming year we also plan to introduce an evening Parent Seminar series on topics that have really commanded our attention, as well as the attention of our students, who have specifically asked us to address in depth the issues of mental health/suicide, sexual harassment, and vaping. (Do not hesitate to contact me if you have other ideas, needs.) Coupling with student sessions in the same time period, we will host evening parent sessions addressing the same issues. Look for announcements of these soon!
And finally, along with new students and families, we also welcome some new Raptor staff:
Ms. Tonya Dover - Data/Attendance Clerk
Dr. Andrea Lupo - Spanish/AP Spanish
Ms. Cindy Phillips - Bookkeeper
Mr. Mitch White - Focus Facilitator
Ms. Sharon Williams - Athletic Director
Ms. Julie Zeigler - Long term sub (Math)
Ms. Kimberly Zerbst - Instructional Coach
TBD - Receptionist Main Desk
With great pride and joy we enter the 2019-2020 school year with even greater expectations, and a renewed commitment to the health and well-being of our families and students! We welcome each of you on this incredible journey!
NOTE: Welcome back to AMHS/Open House will be held on Thursday, September 5 beginning at 5:30PM.
