Charleston County School District (CCSD) Superintendent Anita Huggins unveiled the Peninsula Promise, a comprehensive initiative designed to expand access to high-quality educational experiences for every child living on the historic Charleston Peninsula on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

CCSD announced today that Ms. Cheryl Swinton, Executive Principal of Burke High School, will transition into a new district leadership role as Program Executive for the Peninsula Promise Project, effective July 1, 2026.
During a Special Called Meeting on March 9, the Charleston County School District (CCSD) Board of Trustees unanimously approved Option 5, establishing new attendance lines for elementary schools on the Peninsula.

The Military Magnet Academy girls’ basketball team continued its championship tradition in dominant fashion, capturing the 2026 South Carolina High School League A state title with a 70-21 victory over Great Falls on March 7 at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia.

At Pinehurst Elementary School, learning happens every day. But for one family, something even more special is happening here, too. The Peterson and Petterson family - a grandparent, a daughter-in-law (Wando Class of 1989), and a grandchild (Wando Class of 2020) - plus a cousin (Wando Class of 1991) - each teach under the same roof.
