Drama Group

Students rehearse under the direction of Sharon Murray, drama consultant.

The Drama program promoted an understanding of the research process, observation, role playing, character analysis, enhanced communication skills in listening and speaking, cooperation and problem-solving skills, and writing. Students who participated in this group also learned about and gained an appreciation for the Gullah dialect and the African American custom of using drama to interpret events and emotions.

The students identified significant events in local history as well as the social and economic conditions that prompted behaviors of their ancestors. They researched the life of Esau Jenkins and the backgrounds of some of the play's other characters in order to accurately portray them.
