SEA ISLAND BREEZES

Scene 10

Septima Clark: Esau, the youths from our church are sponsoring a talent show. We would like for you to be a judge.

Esau: Well, when is it?

Septima: This Saturday. Do you think you'll be able to make it?

Esau: I'm sorry, but I don't think I can. I have a conference that I must attend. I'll try to send someone in my place.

Esau's friend: Esau, I have to go to the same conference. Would you like to ride with me?

Esau: Well, I was planning to go on a plane, but I guess it would be safer to ride with you.

Esau's friend: I'm leaving early in the morning so we could get there on time.

Esau: Instead of leaving Saturday morning, we should leave Friday evening in case there is some kind of traffic problems.

Narrator: Esau and his friend left Friday evening as planned, but unfortunately they didn't make it to the conference because of a fatal accident. As a result of the accident, Esau had a massive amount of internal injuries. He died on October 30, 1972 in the hospital.

Among many of his accomplishments not really mentioned in this play but no less significant were: -he was instrumental in getting the Rural Mission started, the Sea Island Comprehensive Health Care, Franklin C. Fetter, John's Island Housing Complex, the Senior Citizen Center, CEO Federal Credit Union, Citizens Committee of Charleston and Head Start. Whenever Esau Jenkins saw a need in his community, he worked to fulfill that need in the best way possible. His Motto: Love is Progress, Hate is Expensive was a motto that he lived and worked by. The Sea Islands are a better place due to the efforts of Esau Jenkins. Thank You!!

Everyone: Esau was a great man, he did many things for the people on the islands and we thank him for striving for the best.

( Voice of Esau on tape. Then as the tape ends the sounds of the drums come alive and starts the dancing of the Cultural Experience)
