SEA ISLAND BREEZES

Scene 8

(Church Service)

Narrator: In this scene it shows a Sunday at Wesley United Methodist Church.

(Townspeople rejoicing and singing songs.)

(Esau stands to make an announcement.)

Esau: I am proud to say that after all our hard work and determination, our children can attend Haut Gap High School on Johns Island. (people applaud)

Esau: I also have some more good news. I'm happy to say the Progressive Club is a great success thanks to the devoted members.

Narrator: After Esau makes his announcements, they collect the offering and begin to praise the Lord and thank him for all he has blessed them with. (choir opens with a song)

Pastor: Thank you choir for that lovely selection. We will now have the scripture reading. Please open your bibles to Psalms 23 - the 1st - 5th verse.

Narrator: As Esau was listening to the pastor stumble over the scripture reading, he began to daydream about a way to help educate the black community. This laid the foundation for the Citizenship School for adult learning. Adults from the island begin to get involved in the program in order to learn to read, handle taxes, and any other issues that they had questions about.

(At the Citizenship School)

Ms.Grimball: Okay, Anderson, do you know how to spell your name?

Anderson: Yes ma'am. A-N-D-E-R-S-O-N M-A-C-K.

Ms. Grimball: Come up to the board and let's write your name.

Narrator: Anderson goes to the board and writes his name with the help of his teacher.

As time passed, word got out that the Citizenship School for adult learning was available to help them. More adults got involved in the classes so that they could learn to read, write and learn the Constitution so they could vote.
