Scene 6
Narrator: After Esau had a meeting with the superintendent, he decided to take matters in his own hands. In this scene,he teams up with the rest of the community in a meeting at Wesley United Methodist Church.
Esau: To begin this meeting let's open up with a song. {Townspeople sing }
Esau: Let us pray. {While praying, townspeople hum along to the song,"At the Cross".}
Esau: Today we will discuss the different issues concerning the general welfare of the people on the islands. As you know,I have been transporting students as well as adults downtown in a bus that I recently purchased with the money I made while working at the market. Yesterday, I went to the superintendent's office to discuss these issues with him. He gave me no response as to what he would do to help us get transportation and to build a non-segregated school on the island.
Townsperson#1: I can't believe him! He's supposed to be the superintendent and he doesn't even care about the needs of our children.
Townsperson#2: I can find a ride to work, but some kind of transportation needs to be provided for my children.
Esau: That is my point exactly. We need to come up with some ideas to get this problem solved.
Townsperson#3: Where are we going to get the financial support?
Esau: We'll find a way. Why don't we just close this meeting because night is falling, and I don't want you all walking in the dark. Let's have a closing song and prayer.
Narrator: While praying, the people hear a car stopping abruptly, a dog moaning, then........GUNSHOTS!
Townspeople: {Screaming,gasping,and in shock. They all run to the doors of the church to see what is going on outside. Surprisingly, Esau was the first one out the door.}
Narrator: The man lay on the ground now dead. Everyone stood around in shock. Esau walked to the body and said:
Esau: Brother Rod has gone on home. They shot him down for running over one of their dogs.
Narrator: And the crowd declared that something must be done.
Townspeople:{sobbing}
Narrator: Esau continued to take children to high school downtown. He transported people to jobs downtown. On the way, Esau made sure that those that could not read practiced. He wanted to make sure that his people could read so that they could vote.
