SEA ISLAND BREEZES

Scene 5

Secretary: Good morning sir. How can I help you?

Esau: I need to speak with the superintendent.

Secretary: Do you have an appointment?

Esau: No ma'am.

Secretary: Well, I'll see what I can do.

(Secretary walks over to the superintendent's office.)

Secretary: Okay sir, the superintendent will see you now.

(Esau walks into the office.)

Esau: Good morning sir. I would like to speak to you about a few issues that I think are very important.

Superintendent: What do you want boy? I ain't got no time to waste on you.

Esau: Well, I'm sorry to waste your time, but I'm going to talk to you anyway. I have been transporting several children back and forth to school downtown because there is not a school for them on the island. I think that you need to either get a school for these kids over here, provide transportation or pay someone to transport them. Since I have been taking these children to school, I think that you should pay me.

Superintendent: (laughing) Pay you? Who asked you to transport students to school? Surely not me.

Esau: Well, if you're not going to pay me, why don't you provide the buses and drivers for the children, and with that you can build a school on the islands.

Mr. Robinson: I don't have any money to waste on Negro children. I'm much to busy for nonsense. Will you please excuse yourself from my office.

Esau: Since you won't help me, I'll have to take matters in my own hands. But thank you for your time Mr. Superintendent.
