Esau Jenkins (1910-1972)

Written by the script writers

"Love is progress, Hate is expensive." These are the words of the late Esau Jenkins. Mr. Jenkins was a respected civil rights leader in the Lowcountry, and as a native of John's Island, he contributed greatly to the progress made on the islands.

With only a fourth grade education, Mr. Jenkins was able to provide transportation for the families on the islands. He taught the children how to type and the adults how to read, write, and interpret the U.S. Constitution in order for them to vote.

Although he had threats on his life, he fought for and accomplished equality and change for all races. From the many actions of Mr. Jenkins, these are a few of his accomplishments: Sea Island Comprehensive Health Care, Citizenship School, Esau Jenkins C.O. Federal Credit Union, Rural Missions, and the Esau Jenkins Scholarship Committee.

Mr. Esau Jenkins may have passed away, but his legacy and light still shine on.

He was truly a great man.
