Harbor View Elementary School Breaks Ground
Principal Lara Latto and Superintendent Dr. Nancy McGinley were joined by officials from CCSD, the city of Charleston, and the town of James Island, as they gathered to break ground on the construction site at the new facility for Harbor View Elementary School. Faculty, students, and parents were excited to witness the beginning stages of this much anticipated school. Principal Latto, reminisced about her lineage of family ties to the school. In support of the new site, Latto was joined by three former Harbor View administrators, Principal Mason, Principal Ellenberger, and Principal Wall, and current principals from surrounding District 3 schools; Stephen Burger, Principal of Stiles Point Elementary School and Deborah Davis-Fickling, Principal of James Island Elementary School.
To celebrate Earth Day, the fifth grade chorus sang “This Pretty Planet,” with the message of protecting and preserving the world in which we live. Also, in commemoration of Earth Day, fourth grade SAIL students paid homage to their school by mixing soil from both the current Harbor View site and from the grounds of the new facility. The soil was used to create individual rosemary plant souvenirs, as a symbol of remembrance. An original poem co-written by teachers Victoria Ahearn and Lisa Laughlin was placed in the potted plant.
The poem read:
“Rosemary for remembrance
Of a school no longer here.
The soil a reminder of the
Ground we broke this year.
With tenderness and love and care
The plant will thrive you know
Just as the students at Harbor
View flourish, learn, and grow.”
Charleston County Mayor Pro Tempore Dudley Gregorie, Council Member Kathleen Wilson, District 3 Constituent Board Chair Rhonda Waters, and Associate Superintendent Terri Nichols offered brief and inspirational remarks during the ceremony. Representatives from Rosenblum-Coe Architects, Inc., and TQ Constructors, Inc. were also in attendance to see their project come to light.
