CCSD Lead Story - October 29, 2012
Congratulations to Mrs. Ashlee Newton, the October 2012 Teacher of the Month. Mrs. Newton is a fourth grade teacher at Hunley Park Elementary School, and has been teaching in Charleston County School District (CCSD) for almost three years. A dedicated educator, who is passionate about her student’s academic achievement, Mrs. Newton founded and personally funded the Math and Science Club at Hunley Park. A committed leader across the curriculum board, she also serves as her school’s science liaison and has participated in Barbara Hairfield’s multi-year federal grant for social studies, Teaching American History. The grant provides intense professional development and is targeted towards improving teacher content knowledge and pedagogy skills with the intent for improved instruction for student achievement. Mrs. Newton’s commitment to the grant and other activities that she champions is a testament to the three words that were used to best describe her: dedicated, hardworking, and driven.
Upon completion of their first series of data meetings (grant requirement) at Hunley Park, Mrs. Newton had the highest test scores in the fourth grade in every category. Now that is remarkable! Mrs. Newton was surprised at her school with flowers, a plaque, a commemorative mug, and gift cards from Sam’s Club and Outback Steakhouse. Hats off to you Mrs. Ashlee Newton, as the CCSD October 2012 Teacher of the Month!
