14 Honored at Annual MLK Picture Awards 1/18/2013

event emceesWednesday night, representatives from the City of Charleston and CCSD joined many of our local and state leaders for the 15th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Picture Awards at Burke High School. SC Representative Wendell Gilliard, the event founder, presented 14 distinguished Award recipientsCharlestonians with 2013 Picture Awards to honor their work and commitment in keeping with the ideals and philosophies of Dr. King. The awards are presented annually to individuals who go above and beyond the call of duty to improve the quality of life for the residents of our community.

This year's keynote Anita Zuckerspeaker, philanthropist and education advocate Anita Zucker, addressed the crowd of more than 250 attendees on similar struggles that have been faced by African Americans and those in the Jewish community, and stressed the importance of keeping Dr. King's vision alive and moving forward for all groups who continue to face the injustices of racism.Award recipients

Rousing performances by the Charleston Development Academy Choir, the Citadel Gospel Choir, and saxophonist Devone Gary punctuated a moving video of Dr. King's speeches and a special tribute to the honorees.
