From the Superintendent's Desk - February 24, 2012

This week is all about our people, with a major focus on teachers.

CCSD student bagging oyster shellsOn Monday, we held a new rigorous interview process for early childhood teachers.  The idea is to screen for the skill and will necessary to succeed in any school in CCSD. Teachers interested in joining our team were interviewed, observed conducting model lessons, and assessed on a writing sample.  The planners of this session did an outstanding job.  In the coming months, this process—which strengthens our pool of available teachers and makes clear our standard of excellence—will be applied to teachers of other grade levels.

Teacher of the MonthOn Tuesday, I had my monthly meeting with the Teacher Roundtable.  We talked about my number one budget priority this year—investing in our people.  I just wrote an opinion piece for the newspaper on this, and want to share it with you.  Please read my commentary and let me know what you think at superintendent@charleston.k12.sc.us.  We recently earned our best state report card in history, and when we invest in our people, we invest in our students, goals, and continued improvement.

Gala Save the DateWe see examples of great teaching all across our district.  (Watch a video of this month’s Teacher of the Month, who was just surprised with an award yesterday.)  And tonight, at the second annual Evening with the Stars gala, we’ll be joining business and community partners in celebrating our high achieving teachers—one from each school—and a small group of principals!  I can’t wait for the gala.  Maybe I’ll see you there and if I don’t, I look forward to telling you about it next week.

Go CCSD, and go teachers!
